that totally depends on your shell...

if it's csh or tcsh or something of that like, you do
setenv variable value

if it's bash or something of that like, you do
export variable="value"

if you just do set variable=value
it sets the variable locally in the shell, but DOESN'T make it an environment variable (except in bash you can then "export variable" and have it become an environment variable)

damn...
i did the "setenv var=value" thru telnet with root previleges, but when i restarted the system, the variables wernt there anymore!
so i opened a winterm on sgi... then i did it, and it was there when i make env command.. but when i restart.. theres nothing there!

btw... it appears like that:

SETNICK=some NICK=
SETUSER=some USER=

why = appears at the end?
thanks

Environment variables are not preserved between system restarts (or even different shell instances). You would need to add these environment variables to your shell's initialization file (for example .cshrc for tcsh/csh or .profile for bash).

It's there because you specified it. The correct syntax is:

setenv var value

not

setenv var=value

If you just want those set for when you run bitchx, I'd recommend either a shell script, or for your nick, just specify it in the command line:
BitchX mynick my.fav.irc.server

or "SETUSER=myuser SETNICK=mynick BitchX"
should also work
