6.5.16f no longer available for DL

Unread postby Shtoink » Sat Feb 01, 2003 5:12 pm

Appearantly SGI doesn't want everyone to be able to get ahold of the 6.5.16f anymore. I'm I had recently downloaded the update when I did, because now it's no longer available for those with just a free Supportfolio account. I see that the 6.5.15f and lower are still available but even the 6.5.17m is and higher are unavailable now.

I wish they could figure out a standard and stay with it, I hate having all the cool stuff dangled in front and then taken away stuff. It makes me wish they were more like Sun in that aspect. Sun's OS is free, you pay out the nose for the hardware to run it on. I guess that's one of the bad things about being "just a hobbyist". The $600 price tag makes it rough to get the full licensing and support from SGI. Not sure about you, but that's a big chunk of my pcket right there.

How does Nekonoko stay on top of it all?

Feature stream releases were never a free download ... only 'm' (maintenance) releases. If you are having problems getting 6.5.17m from Supportfolio you can get it from PlanetMirror as per my article last week: http://www.nekochan.net/weblog/archives/000064.html.

I'm a member of the SGI Developer's Program so I get the latest releases that way.

The older feature streams are available, but until recently they had 6.5.16f and lower but that changed to 6.5.15f and lower. I already have the 16f and obtained it freely from SGI's site, but that's no longer an option unless I want to change the maintenance stream.

Glad I got when I did...

6.5.15 feature stream is avaliable.
I don't know if this link will work (because of login):
http://support.sgi.com/content_request/20021216064636-IRIXOSRelease-8251/index.html
I found it by searching for "IRIX" under download once I logged in, searching for 6.5.15f gets nothing.
See: http://null-ptr.net/~dustin/6.5.15f.gif (down, removed file)

This is what I see with Developer Online: http://www.nekochan.net/images/support.jpg

One thing I noticed is that disc 2 of the .18m download is the Feature release, so you get both even though it doesn't show f as unlocked.

So, 6.5.15f is avaliable to anyone who signs up, and 6.5.16f was avaliable but is no longer. I hope others read this before they pull .15f, and remember to install the developement foundations and libraries before you apply the feature stream (got to reload my Indy because of that, unless someone knows a better way).

Nekonoko, what are you helping develop? Are there any sort of requirements to be a developer?

Oh no, that the minimum feature release i would like to have, so that i can use a wheel mouse :x

I've tried to download 6.5.15f using the link and i was very surprised that it worked... using the "normal" way using supportfolio, it only allowed me to get maintenance releases, not feature.

Like Shtoink, i'm very disapointed that sgi doesn't take care of hobbyists, creating a parallel market for sgi foundation cds on Ebay. And 600$ for a license, it's more than i paid for my O2, so... i hope that on day sgi will do like sun.

I think that 6.5.16f is the one that introduced scoll mice and more than 3 buttons.

I just wish that the prices on aby for the newer updates didn't get so rediculously high, that's another sad thing about being "just a hobbyist". There is an SGI office nearby me, I'm tempted to see if they are hiring or if they have a bone to toss me. I'm also tempted to just get a dang service contract.

Yep, though I believe that 6.5.16m will work as well.

Developer online?

Unread postby lisp » Wed Feb 05, 2003 5:32 am

I've got a developer online account, but it doesn't seem to give me any extra entitlements for downloading - do I have to do something special to enable it?

No, not that I'm aware of ... one thing to check would be to make sure your Supportfolio/Devloper Online account information matches as I've heard that can potentially cause the entitlements not to show. Unfortunately SGI seems to be a bit random on who is able to download what at the moment.
