QEmu on IRIX, bye bye softwindows 95.
Using this:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2004-10/msg00023.html
One should be able to run Windows 98, 2000, XP, Linux, BeOS on IRIX at decent speeds.
I sent an email to Johannes, asking him if the port was usuable, he simply replied that he only tried linux and windows 98, but everything seemed fine to him.
You can download the latest patches here:
http://libvncserver.sourceforge.net/qemu/
Lots of work still need to be done, audio driver, networking etc, but it looks great so far.

true, there are times when thanks to bastard company's we need windows.
problem is, in these cases it almost allways needs to run native.
example.
i own:
1 universal programmer
3 smartcard programmers
2 pic programmers
1 jtag interface
1 bdm interface
1 gsm serial interface
1 scsi-linked sat reciever
and f'knows how many other things.
none of these work in wine because the emulation dioes not extend to the hardware ports.
they definatly wont work on sgi, because the ports arent even the same.
anything that is not about running external hardware i am sure i can find a better solution in the open-source world than using win-crap.
if i could have one wish from that list, it would be for wine to fully support the scsi hardware.
sgi could do that too, but i bet it wont

I just compiled qemu 0.6.1 with the appropriate patch set applied on an R10k Indigo2 with IRIX 6.5.21. Compilation works pretty fine, there are just two things to remember:
1. It is meant to be compiled with gmake, the IRIX make will complain about missing separators.
2. If configure lists the cpu as unknown, You have to edit the configure script: It invokes uname -m; if the output is "IP27" it is translated to "mips", but other platforms e.g. IP28 are ignored. You could change "uname -m" to "uname -p" which gives "mips" directly or change IP27 to whatever-You-have in the list. The linux test image provided on the QEMU homepage works, but this one is non-graphical.
Has anyone been able to evaluate the performance (when running a windows guest OS) in comparison to SoftWindows? Being able to run something more modern (and more stable) than Win95 (let's say Win2000) sounds exciting
Greetings
Oliver
Sounds great, could you make the binary available?

I think porting it to IRIX would not only be useful for us, but maybe SGI. Maybe a patch to support multiple processors. Run virtualized windows or linux on a SGI MIPS box would be awesome. Since they seem to want to be a non-graphics company. IBM has been doing it. A Origin 3400 running hundreds (thousands maybe) of virtualized servers....how's that for lowering TCO Micro$haft!?!? The MIPS chips seem to deal better with threading issues than the PowerPC chips do, so IBM would be getting a run for their R&D money!
