Hmm..... Irix and partitioning...anyone know how?

Lets say I have an old version of Irix taking a full 4gb disc and a new version which I want to keep. Without any Irix CDs, how would I format this disc to just give me more free space as an extension to my home directory?
Lets say I had many bootable hardisks, each with different 6.5 revisions of Irix, will I be able to use this free space as a sort of mutual stored drive?

Strictly speaking if they are all seperate partitions then exclusion of certain ones from the static filesystem should work. I used to share swapspace like that. However that wasn't under IRIX...
