i just installed irix on my pheeew:el, i've done this before (long time ago on my o2) and it's not that scary

basically with

- sgi's pdf : IRIX 6.5 Installation Instructions

- ian's notes: Installing IRIX 6.5

+

- the following cds:

    6.5.26 Installation Tools & Overlays 1 of 3, Nov 2004
    6.5.26 Overlays 2 of 3, Nov 2004
    6.5.26 Overlays 3 of 3, Nov 2004
6.5 Applications, Nov 2004 [Applications CD that comes with 6.5.26]
    6.5 Foundation 1, Jun 1998
    6.5 Foundation 2, Jun 1998

i got 6.5.26 up and running on the fuel in less than 20 minutes. once installed you can take it from there and install extra sw...

the seller must be authorized vendor...as I have seen seller auction at least over 100 unopened packages ranging from last current overlay 6.5.30 back through old sets. some are full sets and some are overlays only. from my understanding...you are allowed irix on sgi hardware. what else can you run it on?

the vendor can only sell sgi hardware not the software hence...the original sgi screw.

legal legit and most packages are unopened virgin discs.

this is real authentic product...can you still buy support on a used sgi thats not certified?

end of life product..and you are NOT pirating or copying.

so you all tell me if this is taboo here ... if so then kill this thread.

I am doing everything in my power to keep away from the use of black copies.
Since we have already determined that my cd set is no good, I give permission for the mods to do what they want to the thread.

You are allowed to run the version of IRIX that originally shipped with the machine or whatever version your support contract entitled you to upgrade to. In other words, if you have an O2 that shipped with IRIX 6.3, but there was never any maintenance or support, then you are not legally entitled to run 6.5 on it, at least in the USA.

No - this is not like the MS Windows OEM stuff. IRIX is licensed to systems, not "hardware."
pinball_0 wrote:end of life product..and you are NOT pirating or copying.

EOL has nothing to do with it. SGI has not relinquished licensing rights, even if the product is EOL'd.

The discussion so far is probably okay. Just don't cross the line into solicitations to buy, sell, or traade.

My first Irix install was also around 2008.

The issue I had was that I was installing on a disk that was already partitioned for Irix 5.3 or something, and was set to the EFS filesystem.

It turned out that Irix 6.5 install would honor that setting, then cancel the installation when it was about to start giving an error about missing EFS packages.

Only after a lot of searching around did I figure out I had to destroy the partitions and create the whole thing again, and then it worked.
