It has begun. I'm Installing Irix for the first time.

Unread postby pentium » Sat Jan 19, 2008 11:14 pm

I FINALLY found a good hard drive to put in my indigo2 and as we speak I am performing a pre-install disk exercise to be positive nothing goes wrong.
Anyways, this is my first ever attempt to install Irix and after some work I managed to boot from the "Irix 6.5.8 Installation tools and overlays (1 of 3), May 2000" cd but I still have these cd's:
-Irix 6.5 Foundation 1
-Irix 6.5 Foundation 2
-ONC3/NFS Ver. 3
-Overlay 2 of 3, May 2000
-Overlay 3 of 3, May 2000
-Development Foundation
-Development libraries
-Irix 6.5 Applications, Aug. 2000

In what order should I have them when I am installing?
Also, Are the drivers for my Galileo and Cosmo compression boards on the cd's?
What else should I load? The system has a blank 30Gb hard drive in it.

1. The order doesnt matter
2. Driver for Videoboards are in the /unbundeld directory. You have to add the directory to the the distribution. Otherwise install it later. Keep in mind that you need the base drivers for your board also.

As joerg mentions, the unbundled directory only contains the overlay drivers. You can find the base drivers for you video option boards at Ian's as well:

i remember my first time...

i was so nervous. i kept thinking, am i going to be good enough? how long is this going to last? do i leave the lights on, or shut them off? will i have to do it twice, three, or maybe four times even? after everything's said and done, will everyone be happy? will i regret my first time? should i wait until i'm older maybe? ;)

but like anything, with enough practice you get better and better. i've loaded irix so many times i think i could install it on my microwave now. just follow the guide above, and you'll be all set.

good luck!
i'm into it because of the hardware

1: The install prereqs command will not work (That's normal)

2: Java_dev.sw.base is incompatible with Java_eoe.sw.base.
What should I do?

a) Do not install Java_dev.sw.base
b) Do not install Java_eoe.sw.base
c) Open new distribution to resolve conflict

Unless you plan to do java development, I'd opt to not install Java_dev.sw.base.

I hate not living in a perfect world.
I'm being bombarded with media errors and an illegal request killed the install at 94% on overlay 3 of 3.

I can't recover from that illegal request.
I think it's time to scrub the install and start over again.
I'll go check to see if I am having any scsi cabling issues and then check for damage to the cd's.

Okay, I just started the clear the drive so I can start over again but I have bad news with the cd's.
Overlay 2 of 3, The development foundation and the applications cd are physically damaged (as in I can see light pass through little holes in the reflective data layer) and they re the ones that were giving me the most grief but the rest look fine to the naked eye.

That's depressing, where did you get your installation media? Any warranty or such-like? I just got the 6.5.30 overlays for my octane2, but have not yet attempted the upgrade. A bit trepidacious actually....

The cd's came with my Indy which came from a fellow canadian.
I still find it strange they are damaged as they all have their own cd cases.

You may try to do bit-to-bit copy of the faulty media. Burn it onto a new CD and try. But it's a long shot I'm afraid. Otherwise? Get new media? :?
