Problem installing IRIX on my Tezro

Unread postby Irinikus » Tue Mar 20, 2018 7:26 pm

Today I decided to go ahead and do a fresh install of IRIX on my Tezro, and this is proving to be impossible to do!

What version of IRIX 6.5 is necessary, as the disk set that I have is from 2001 and I think this might be the problem?

Here are some screen shots of the process I followed:

When I get to this point, the prom reboots

Once the prom has rebooted, I get this screen:

Any help concerning this matter would be much appreciated

It may be nothing, but I am a little surprised to see "boot file dksc(0,1,8)/sash" with a slash. The volhdr has no directories and I just don't expect a slash there. Additionally, the location of the sash file during installation is supposed to be the CDROM, not the hard disk, so it should be looking in "dksc(0,4,8)sash64" or something like that.

How do I change where the machine tries to boot from, bearing in mind that it copies the installation files to disk?

Tezro support was added in IRIX 6.5.21 I believe, this was released in 2003. Hence if you're using an older 2001 CD set, this may be why it isn't working. You can get later IRIX CD images from the Internet Archive if you search for them (updated, don't think 6.5.30 is there).
Systems in use:

:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

Thanks very much for the info. (Yet another problem to solve)

My copy of IRIX is 6.5.11 from 2001

Here's a shot of the system's environment variables, and from what I can tell, they seem to be correct.

This is an excuse for me to buy a properly pre-built 15K, IRIX 6.5.3 disk for the machine!

Why don't you try installing IRIX 6.5.22? A popular release, very stable and bloat-free (relatively speaking, of course), which also works on many older systems, and it was made freely available for download at SGI Supportfolio at some point. You should be able to find it archived across the internet.

LOOKING FOR:
HIGH IMPACT-AA or MAXIMUM IMPACT graphics board set (for IP28)

6.5.22 is available online if you search for it. I can't directly link to it here for obvious reasons, but seeing as it was made available on SupportFolio for free anyway, shouldn't be a problem to download it.

I'm after the extras that come with a pre-built disk! (it will make the machine far more interesting to play with)

I suppose I should have done my research before trying to carry out a fresh install, but the flame installation which was on the disk was useless to me anyway!

I had carried out fresh installs on my other machines with the disk set, so I assumed it would work on the Tezro! (so you learn)

Might want to speak to Ian for that. His IRIX HDDs are absolutely stuffed to the gills with bits and pieces. I use the pre-built disks for both my Indigo2 and Fuel, with a raw install of IRIX on my O2 for general experimenting.

I have already contacted him.

I don’t at the moment, the files are currently being downloaded.

If you have a machine that can run Debian you can set up a linux install server.
:Octane: - 1xR12k 400Mhz, 1GB RAM, V8 GFX, 18Gb 10K & 36Gb 15K HDD, 6.5.30

I use Dina these days for IRIX installation. Runs nicely as a VM from my main PC, and as it already has the necessary shares etc. set up, it's a doddle to use.
