(partialy solved) Octane + Irix 6.5.26 becoming slow

My Octane (O1.5 - mono 400Mhz - Ram 2Go + V8 + Irix 6.5.26) became subitly slow at start up after I've solve a network connexion problem between this station and my Mac.
I use the HOW TO : IRIX Installation and Customization to solve my problem.

(my ipadresse) IRIS.home.local IRIS
no more ipadress
#$ROUTE $QUIET add net default (my route adress)

I don't do : "Move $HOME for user root and change the default shell"

---

After login, the display time of the desktop icons has tripled. It takes about 10s to open and display a simple Unix shell window and it's the same for the Icon Catalog ... all actions in the system are slow. And the only software witch doesn't open is Photoshop (Edit : now, after 30' without touching the workstation, Photoshop works !?!?).

It's the same with other users accounts except that Photoshop opens and works perfectly.

After a quicklook in the Process Manager, I found something sounds strange for me :
4 "biod" process - same date/time
2 "eventmond" ...
5 "nfsd" ...
2 "soundscheme" - with more than 2 minutes between them
2 "tfxd" - with more than 2 minutes between them
2 "xdm" - with more than 2 minutes between them

I'm sure I do something wrong and I hope somebody could help me to solve this problem.

90%+ of the time, this is due to DNS issues. Search nekochan.net for "resolv.conf" to get some ideas.

Most of the rest of the time, it is due to something looking for resources on the previous owner's network, like an NFS share. Take a look at the /etc/fstab file and verify that there are no entries for machines that are not accessible. Also check that none of the desktop icons are aliases that point to resources on the previous owner's network.

Hello Josehill, thanks for your reply :-)

1- In the "resolv.conf" file I've got :

Code: Select all

domain home.local
nameserver (my web-box/router ip-adresse)

2- In the "fstab" file I've got :

Code: Select all

/dev/root / xfs rw,raw=/dev/rroot 0 0

3- fter your reply, I've removed from the desktop the alias of my Mac's shared folder.

also check the nsswitch.conf and make sure everything has "local" first. unless of course you do actually have a network service for the entry

Try adding this line to /etc/resolv.conf :

Code: Select all

hostresorder local dns

You might also try removing the "domain home.local" line, but that's probably not the problem.

The resolv.conf and nsswitch.conf files are both intended to configure DNS. resolv.conf is the "old way," while nsswitch.conf is the "modern way." FWIW, it's probably better to use the nsswitch.conf way, since many newer non-SGI Unix systems use it, but I've never had a problem using the old resolv.conf file, which IIRC takes precedence over nsswitch.conf when both are present.

Try running "chkconfig esp off" and reboot.

Thanks a lot for your help :-)

After a short night, I remembered I have turned ON NIS ... So I've turned it OFF, restarted the workstation and everything works well again ! Except I can't access to the shared folder of my Mac ... :-(

With NIS, I can access to shared folder on my Mac.
Without NIS, I view the shared folder of the Mac but can't accessed to it.

In the two conditions, Mac can access to the shared folder of the SGI.
