So I'm having a problem installing IRIX

Unread postby praetor242 » Tue Mar 14, 2017 2:05 pm

I've been following this (http://techpubs.spinlocksolutions.com/i ... linux.html) guide and "SGI-ified" my tftp server I have on my raspi.

Partitioning goes on without a hitch. It does get its files off the raspi. But when I start the install, setup the network and everthing from the "Inst 4.1 Main Menu", I get this error

Code: Select all

ERROR: The distribution 192.168.2.11:irix/3/dist does not exist

The directory is disc 1 of overlay 6.5.22

I can see from the auth logs on the raspi that the sgi does successfully rsh into the tftp server, but....that's as far as I've gotten.

Hey, this means you've gotten to the last section of the guide ("Starting the installation")?

Does the error you report show up when you choose "Install system software" -> "Remote directory" -> <hostname> and <directory>?

Or when you go to open each distribution and you run: "from <server_ip>:/path/to/files"?

Pop yourself a slash between : & path.. so when it asks for path /irix/3/dist

[edit - better put my dumbass disclaimer in. It's just something I do regarding the slash]

Yeah. I've gotten to the last section of this guide.

When I do "Install system software" -> remote directory -> 192.168.2.11:irix/3/dist it pulls the installation tool "Inst 4.1 Main Menu"

so I go into the admin section, do a 'sethostipaddr' and a 'sethostname' to bring up the network, and then do a 'from 192.168.2.11:irix/3/dist' and that's when I get the distribution does not exist.

Even if I put a / in the path, it still does the same thing.

First check that you specified the slash at the beginning (should be /irix/3/dist).

Second, check if /irix/3/dist really exists on your install server. (If you only have /irix/3/ and no dist/ subdirectory in it, then specify just /irix/3)

I'm having a beer and calming my shit. SGI did not make IRIX intuitive to install.

Network installs from other OSes are not easy. I use my Challenge S as my installation slave.

Well, this is my only working SGI atm...so...: (

Whelp. I dunno. I can get it to pull down sash from the bootp server, but when I type in 'install' it says:

Code: Select all

Unable to load <drive address>/unix: no such file or directory
Faile to boot

Press <Enter> to return to the menu

And that's by telling it where to get sash from using the command monitor.

So...it so happens I'm going to BigLots tommorow...and I'll just get some CD-Rs . F**king shite!

You need EFS images of the discs to do that. Do not attempt with regular images.

The images I have, I believe are EFS images.

Pretty strange, I did not yet encounter the issue you mention.

Could you enter the toplevel directory where you put all your irix files on the install server and report the output of these commands:

pwd
find . -type d

And then also provide the content of tftp and bootp config files.

This should be pretty easy to figure out and solve, we just need more info on the details of the configuration on the server side.

(I am suspecting that either the path is wrong, or that your root dir in fttp/bootp config is set to an unexpected value so it is looking into /some/prefix/irix/3/dist which doesn't exist)

Hey,

Another idea as I was looking through your report. You said:

"Unable to load <drive address>/unix: no such file or directory
Failed to boot"

If this is really the correct message (i.e. if it really said "/unix" and not "/unix.IP??"), then this means that your machine is trying to boot the incorrect kernel file.

I believe there are two solutions:

1) Maybe there is an environment variable in the prom (run 'printenv') which sets the kernel filename. I would run 'resetenv' to clear the environment to defaults and then try again, or I would change this specific variable to point to the appropriate unix.IP?? file (you can see the list of available kernel filenames if you do "ls -al 3/dist/miniroot/" on your install server).

2) If that doesn't help and it is still looking for a file "/unix", then simply go to the install server and make a symlink "unix" to point to the appropriate unix.IP?? file.

Report your results.

I got some CDs today, so I'll do a CD install. I still want to get the install server working, because this won't be my last SGI. I'll try it on my nekkid one tonight. I've resetenv several times. How do I tell which unix.IP** file it needs?

God I forgot how painful IRIX CD installs are. You can make a drinking game out of it. If there is a conflict...have a shot. If you have to change a CD....have 2 shots. If it's a big long ass list of conflicts...have a beer and 2 shots.

But...I finally have it going. It's been a long time since I've done an IRIX install.
