Mount SGI CDROM on Arch Linux

Unread postby techgrrl » Thu Mar 09, 2017 5:12 pm

I need a bit of help - and yes I've scoured the net for answers including the wiki here - but I'm hoping you guys would know or point me in the right direction.

I've an Octane2 with 'no' CDROM drive (external) - I'm trying to get some of my collection of SGI cdroms onto the Octane2 but can't find a viable way to transfer files - seems that 'mount' cannot recognize the file system type of any of the cdroms - short of finding an old working external scsi cdrom drive are there any accepted ways of reading SGI cdroms on non-sgi systems? Arch Linux in my case.

Thanks for any help!

Cheers,
Karyn

You can't. Linux doesn't recognize EFS (the FS SGI images use).

Best get an external scsi cdrom or find someone with the IRIX cdroms in tar.gz format - obviously can't discuss that here though.

I was successful with using the commands from the "Mounting IRIX CDs on Non-IRIX Systems" article on the Nekochan wiki on Ubuntu 12.04 and IIRC also on Ubuntu 14.04, specifically:

Code: Select all

$ sudo mount -o ro,loop -t efs /dev/cdrom /mnt

$ ls -la /mnt
total 8

This might also work on Arch Linux, but as robespierre mentioned, you need EFS support.

That's the first time I heard that a distro came without EFS.

Debian stable here. Works like a charm and has done so for as long as I can remember. I keep images of all my IRIX CDs on my server:

Going to take my tub of CDs in to work today - barring that I'll spin up a VM and see if I can find one that will read them - I have a ton so it would be nice to check them out - I also have an Indigo2 eXtreme w/cdrom - but oh well - looks like I'm in the market for an external CDROM drive :)

Appreciate the post though :)

If you have an Indigo2 with CDROM, then why not share it over the network?

Would be much easier, but saying that, you may need one someday, so I should get one.

Ah, again I stand corrected. I didn't know EFS was supported on Linux, at least since the 2.4.x kernels.
