Problem with new drive on Indigo

Unread postby jammaster » Sat Dec 10, 2016 6:49 am

Hello!
I reinstall my second Indigo R3K.
I have put a fresh ST12550N 2.5GB 7200 disk on the first bay.
This drive is empty and seeable on my RS6000.
The problem is with the fx.IP12 utility.
the console say: can't read sgi label on disk.
It's normal cause the disk is empty... But
creating default bootinfo
creating default partitions
creating default volume directory ... all this posted on screen and ok.
Usually, it turn on the menu screen but here, NOTHING.
The console is bricked with a green bar (bug).
The keyboard is working (vernum led ... cap lock).
The disk ID is 1 (not 0) and in standard jumper configuration (term power from drive).
the disk is correctly posted on HINV -V ( dksc(0,1,8))
When i switch my termination jumper, the scsi bus seem to be corrupted (all scsi devices posted on hardware inventory ... bug?)
My other disk work fine!
A partitioning problem?
Is it a problem already treated and "childish"?

Found myself.
My 5.3 installation CD seem to dislike the XS8 framebuffer.
sashIP12 and fx.IP12 work great with XS24 but brick my R3K with XS8 (!!!).

Okay, haven't seen that before. Weerd bug.

Good that you solved it by exchanging the GFX, but when you don't have any spare boards the only alternative way to initialize such a disk is by pulling the graphics card and execute sashIP12 and fx.IP12 via the serial console.

Yes, thank for the advice.
In add, i'm very lucky: My external sgi cdrom have a 512k jumper. It save my life with the IP12 for booting!
It remind my old RS/6000 POWER1 where you need to put the right floppy for the right framebuffer during maintenance mode for having something at screen!
