renaming toolchest

Unread postby uunix » Sat Nov 12, 2016 9:26 am

I'd like to rename the toolchest to the system name in (I presume) system.chestrc
As in dynamically ? %hostname% etc?
Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Good question. I'm nowhere near an IRIX machine at the moment, so I can't give a definitive answer, but I used to include the following in the /etc/csh.cshrc file on all systems I used to administer (/etc/csh.cshrc file gets "sourced" for all csh/tcsh shells, which were the default in that environment):

Code: Select all

alias toolchest 'toolchest -title <your_hostname> -name <your_hostname> &'

Using that trick, I could login remotely to any of our boxes, invoke the toolchest command, and have a toolchest with the remote hostname and a "close window" button appear on my local desktop. As an additional visual cue, I also liked having a vertical toolchest for some systems and a horizontal one for others.

Since it sounds like you want to change the displayed text that for the toolchest that launches locally when you start a new desktop, i.e. upon initial login, I'd look in the toolchest documentation for "name" and "title". In particular, my guess is that there would be a way to specify the "title" parameter in either $HOME/.chestrc or the system-wide equivalent.

The Toolchest is a proper X application and uses X resources for strings. Just set Toolchest.title before launching, e.g.

Code: Select all

echo "Toolchest.title: Chest Tool" >> .Sgiresources

(If you're testing out, remember that the resources aren't loaded from file until the next login or loaded via xrdb)

Edit:
Upon closer reading of the manual, you can even do this:

Code: Select all

Toolchest.title: Tool Chest: SERVERHOST

Thanks guys, you are correct josehill, in the first statement that it's for remote administrating. duck, your solution works fine, I was looking for a system variable for hostname but nothing mentioned on the web seem to display. But since I only have a few machines manually entering it into the .Sgiresources file work for me.
