Emacs 25.1 started dropping support for IRIX

Unread postby kubatyszko » Sun Sep 18, 2016 8:20 am

Remember my post where I said it was a breeze to compile emacs (23-some version) under IRIX?
http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16725912&hilit=emacs

Well, won't be true for long:

** By default, Emacs no longer works on IRIX. We expect that Emacs
users are not affected by this, as SGI stopped supporting IRIX in
December 2013. If you are affected, please send a bug report. You
should be able to work around the problem either by porting the Emacs
undumping code to GCC under IRIX, or by configuring --with-wide-int,
or by sticking with Emacs 24.4.

Cheers

When I was a boy, we toggled in README files from the front console with one finger. If you made a mistake, you started over. Uphill, both ways, in the snow.

Not an emacs user myself, I don't use my SGIs for much text editing that Nedit can't handle, but I would assume that the old version is fine, at least for now.

This is the point where I'd make fun of the Cult of the Perpetual Update moaning about "but what about securityyy!!!" in relation to a text editor, but considering that emacs is practically everything but an operating system unto itself, that may actually be a valid concern here

I prefer emacs over the vi-family, but I still won't lose any sleep over this. Or more accurately, I'm not interested in offering myself up for ritual abuse by the FSF's team of emacs weenies to meet whatever level of activity they would demand to keep supporting IRIX. Assuming they could even be convinced...

But this does remind me that I should start/resume archiving releases that still build on various platforms...

No way, you put the bitstream in direct with a straight code key. None of this "async" stuff either - you kept in sync with the system clock!

Pfft. The Emacs crowd is a circlejerk of Stallmanists anyways. Everything about SGI violates their meaning to exist.

I like emacs. On my Mac, my SGI, my Linux, even on the Windows machine@work. It is even possible to use emacs and ignore all this flamewar and bitching from bystanders. :D

Alas IRIX is slowly fading into the past, little by little. :(

That's unsupported and undeveloped OS's for you. Windows XP is also seeing support dropped by more and more programs, and it had a much larger user-base than IRIX, and was supported until more recently too. It's just inevitable unfortunately that developers don't see the point in maintaining code and support for an OS that is considered obsolete :(
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30
