Hi all,

*Noob mode on*

Ok, here is the deal. i finally got my 13w3 to vga adapter (with DIP-switches) and it works great.
Powered up my onyx2 and there are several accounts on it, and i don't have the password.
Now....i read that you can remove the rootpassword from the /etc/passwd file.
So i put in the first disc of IRIX and loaded the installation program.

After that i opened a shell with

sh

And then:

#> /root/bin/vi /root/etc/passwd

i deleted the entry between the first and the second column (:)

and saved with:

:w!
:q

All went well and i returned to inst.

then the

•admin recalculate•

then:

Inst> quit

Please wait.. . . . .

Ready to restart the system. Restart?

[y,n]

Answered yes, allowing inst to clean up the volume header.

Ready to restart the system. Restart? [y,n] yes

The system rebooted and when i tried to login as root it did not work.
It still asks for a password and leaving it blank doesnt work.

Ok...now what did i do wrong here :?:
I've been at it all day long and getting pretty desperate.

Please help :?:

*Noob mode off*

Ron

I had similar problem with my Onyx2 Deskside. I don't remember how I solved it but felt like a bit of an idiot in that it took me hours to figure it out. Try checking to see if there are shadow passwords... The entry you deleted would have just been a star and there would be a /etc/shadow file with entries in it. Check to see if the machine is set up to use NIS or LDAP for authentication. From my vague memory of a very long time ago I did something like remove LDAP from the run level scripts or something like that.

Also check the /etc/default/login file to verify that "MANDPASS=NO". Change it to NO if it is set to YES.
