'screen' command in IRIX

Unread postby mikewolak » Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:51 pm

Hello,

I've recently cross-compiled the Atmel AVR Toolchain to IRIX and have been using my Octane2 for microcontroller development. One thing that I use a lot when debugging is RS232 Serial I/O and since IRIX doesn't have a built in terminal emulator I've been using the screen command from Nekoware with something like 'screen /dev/ttyd1 57600' . This mostly works but it seems there's an artificial delay when inputting/outputting characters to the console from the serial port. I don't see this issue when doing the same thing in OSX or Linux but IRIX seems to be buffering for 100-200ms before outputting. Does anyone know of way to force the tty to flush sooner? If not, have any good "minicom" type apps been ported to IRIX?

Thanks,

Mike Wolak

On the IRIX disksets is a uucp eoe with cu ("connect unix")... cu and uucp been around in UNIX since at least the 1980s if not 1970s.
In addition, kermit took me all of 3 minutes to build:

Thanks for the response PymbleSoftware. I was trying to avoid using 'cu' due to it not being installed on the box and having a hard time finding it on the 6.5 discs I have. I did get Kermit working nicely and to do so without UUCP installed you must supply "-DNOUUCP" to the compiler flags options in the irix65 portion of the Makefile.

Kermit did not exhibit the same input/output lag and had no issue making a direct 57600 baud serial connection to my device. One last note, to have Kermit auto-connect on a specific tty and baud rate you can create a ".kermrc" file in your home directory with the following contents:

SET LINE /dev/ttyd1
SET SPEED 57600
SET CARRIER-WATCH OFF
connect

The above assumes you want to use Serial Port 1 and a buad rate of 57600.

Thanks!

Foundation 1 disk --> IRIX Execution Environment --> UUCP Utilities (eoe.sw.uucp)
