New nekoware mirror

Unread postby Alver » Fri Jan 02, 2009 5:31 pm

Hello there!

I've finished the setup of a new nekoware server; it contains a full replica of nekonoko's own root server. It has loads of disk space and sports a fat 100Mbit pipe that should be able to handle all of your nekosync needs. It syncs every day at 0500 PST (1300 GMT).

Server address: http://us.mirror.nekoware.net !

I'm not the owner of this machine; dns-savvy people will have figured out already that the cool dudes at Guifications have offered the storage and bandwidth - and free of charge :) if you ever bump into one of them, buy them a beer or something :P

Currently the mirror has only http access - I'm still checking on whether they can allow ftp or rsync mirroring for those who want to be secondary mirror, if not I'll try something else. I'll report back if I find a way. :)

Happy nekoware'ing!

Great stuff Alver!
I'll point my nekosync to this mirror.

Please do ;) and if you have the time, report possible quirks (or, if it works like it should, the bandwidths you are seeing compared to your own internet pipe, I'm curious how this baby performs...).

Nekosync seems to be working fine against it!

Note to other nekosync users, don't use the URL as presented in your web browser as it will point to and index page and nekosync will not work with that:
Here are the the correct strings to use in the /usr/nekoware/etc/nekosync.conf file
$mirror = "http://us.mirror.nekoware.net/current";
$extra = "beta http://us.mirror.nekoware.net/beta/";

EDIT. I actually go an error from nekosync using the above setting, anyone else got problem?
I'm running this particular nekosync on my Ubuntu 8.10

Code: Select all

harry@Media:~$ /usr/local/nekosync/nekosync

Stuart, maybe you can put this mirror as 'default' for nekosync once it's verified to be working fine?

OK, thanks for the Info, strange it only bombs out when using alvers mirror and not when using anyone else.
Maybe Stuart has an idea ?

I second that.
And as a suggestion for improvement Stuart, would it be possible to have a secondary mirror that was run on a second pass so if the primary mirror got out of date, the second one would kick in?
As the checking of updated files seems to take minimal bandwidth both pass could actually always run and as long as the primary is in sync there would never be any downloading from the secondary.
I can probably do a quick-and-dirty fix myself by simply having a script changing the config files and running two passes.
But it might be nice to have it directly supported by necosync?

Once I return to work I will set up a mirror in Sweden, it wont be on a fat pipe, but it will at least be dedicated as a Nekoware mirror on a business grade 2MB fixed IP line so it would be a good secondary to alvers Mirror.

You guys managed to scare the guifications people! During the first 24 hours of operation, it moved nearly 8GB of data :lol: Luckily that'll drop once everyone's local nekosync mirror is up to date again ;)
