Oolite, Dangerous...

Unread postby Spooky » Mon Aug 07, 2006 6:00 am

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say that I have completed a stand-alone build of Oolite 1.65 for IRIX (mips 4). Oolite is an open licensed version of Elite that runs on OSX, Windows, Linux and various other *nix. Find out more about Oolite here - http://www.aegidian.org/oolite and here - http://wiki.alioth.net

You can get the tarball for IRIX here - ftp://ftp.alioth.net/oolite/oolite-1.65-installer-IRIX6.5.tar.gz

I'll happily provide build info for anyone who wants to build an entirely nekoware version.

SiliconBunny has a tardist of Elite:TNK which was also an open source clone of Elite. I heard that project was shut down due to copyright issues though and the tardist doesn't appear to contain the source.

Found this note via Google:

All versions of Elite TNK have been pulled at the request of Frontier Developments and David Braben.

Hope these guys don't get shut out the same way ...

No name similarity and the graphics look different enought, I doubt there could be a copyright issue.

A patch or build note for nekoware would be great.

TNK was reverse engineered from the original BBC code hence the copyright issues. Oolite is 100% original and if any proceedings were raised it would be trivial to remove any offending material.

Squeen, would you like me to foward some build notes to you?

tried to run the build but it aborts since it cannot find 'libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.1'. and guess what, while i do have SDL 1.2 installed, along with a good chunk of nekoware, said file is not to be found on my system. :)

That's in a separate package; neko_sdl_mixer-1.2.7.tardist

Code: Select all

[Mai:~] neko 12% versions long | grep libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.1
l     0     0 neko_sdl_mixer.sw.lib m usr/nekoware/lib/libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.1
f 46067  1223 neko_sdl_mixer.sw.lib m usr/nekoware/lib/libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.1.5

GIJoe, after you've run the install script can you look into your Oolite folder and there should be a folder called oolite-deps, this should have 2 sub folders GNUstep and libs. Can you check that the SDL-Mixer lib is in the lib folder. I've checked here and it's definately in the tarball.

The only other thing I can think of is to check that you are running the oolite script in your chosen install directory rather than the executable in oolite-app itself?

If that's not the case can you edit the oolite script. Find the line where it executes the app and hash it out. After that line put ldd oolite. It should look something like this :-

Code: Select all

...rest of script here.
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$OOLITE_ROOT/$TOPLEVEL/oolite-deps/lib
export _RLD_ROOT=$OOLITE_ROOT/$TOPLEVEL/oolite-deps/lib:/usr

cd $OOLITE_ROOT/$TOPLEVEL/oolite.app
#./oolite
ldd oolite
if [ $? != 0 ]
then
   echo
....rest of script here

Run the script and check where it's looking for the SDL Mixer library. If it's not in the oolite-deps/lib folder can you dump the ldd output to me.

Good Luck

TNK rocks! Playing an 80s game on a 90s computer is so cutting edge. Wish Braben would reissue the game on some current platform, I'd gladly play.

As soon as I saw the topic title my thoughts were "cool, must be a geology program". Wrong again...

UrbanHero, my Origin 2000 with SE+Tex gets between 30 and 10 fps depending on the complexity of the scene. My Max Impact (1MB TRAM) I2 get s between 4 and 15 fps.

Make from that what you will. No warrenty implied or supplied... your mileage may vary.

Spooky,
if you like you can forward the mips cc related patches and build notes to me so that i can create a neko_oolite. It looks also that it need some special build tools like gnustep right?

regards
Joerg

Joerg, I'm out of the office and away from my machines until the 17th of August (Motorbike test) but I'll catch up with you on irc then. I'm very interested in the objc and MIPS Pro conunderum, it'll be good to see what you can come up with.

Before I spend days and nights attempting a fresh compile.. does anyone have a copy of
oolite-1.65-installer-IRIX6.5.tar.gz
around that was compiled over a decade ago?
We are losing our precious IRIX software base to time!
