Custom Backgrounds

Unread postby Charlie » Thu Feb 06, 2003 8:53 am

Hi there,

Can anybody help me out?

I'm trying to set up some custom backgrounds but somethings not right.

I've made the changes to /var/X11/xdm/Xservers, converted some files to .xpm and added some entries to .backgrounds.
The entries appear in the toolchest menu but they do not display correctly, they just appear as wierd fuzzy black&white images.

Any ideas?

Maybe you have them in the wrong aspect ratio...

If it is one large image, then you should have it at 1024x786 or 1280x1024. If it's a tilable image then it should be something like a 3:1 size ratio.

Someone correct if I am wrong.

Are the files 8-bit XPM? What did you use to create them?

XV works well for creating XPM: http://freeware.sgi.com/fw-5.3/fw_xv/fw_xv.tardist

If you'd like to try using standard JPEG, you can install xli: http://freeware.sgi.com/Dist/fw_xli-1.16-sgipl1.tardist

Your backgrounds entry would then be similar to the following:

Code: Select all

background "Anime3"
command "-execute /usr/freeware/bin/xli -onroot -fork /usr/people/neko/backgrounds/anime3.jpg"
default "-execute /usr/freeware/bin/xli -onroot -fork /usr/people/neko/backgrounds/anime3.jpg"
exeok "/usr/freeware/bin/xli"
readok "/usr/people/neko/backgrounds/anime3.jpg"

Thanks for the info, its all sorted now.

I downloaded xli and did it that works fine now.

BTW, I've had XV installed for ages but never used it before, its a cool little tool.

Great! :)

XV is indeed very handy for image conversions. It's also nice and fast.

Anyway, the only downside to using xli is that Desktop Overview can't grab the background (preview), but if you've set up keys for desktop switching that's not a big loss.

Duh!
I can't believe I forgot about that part... I used GIMP and sized the image to the correct size and then exported it as an XPM.

I also noticed that the 1280x1024 backgrounds made logging in take about 45~60 seconds longer. I might mess with a few smaller images that I can tile with and see how that turns out.

You don't want to know what it does to the Indy R4600PC  You will have to let me know how many hours the PI takes to login.
