Whats the lowest setting you can have for gamma under irix? 1.0, or can you run it lower then that?

I think .1 is the lowest.
I never tried it though.
I would be staring at a black screen.
Another question would be,
what gamma setting to use?
Does one use the default of 1.7 or set it to 1.0?
1.0 is used for professional video/film work.
Macs use 1.8 for default.

I use 1.0 on my TFTs; colors look great at that setting. A tube based monitor should probably be set a little higher though.

1.4 here, on most systems that support it. But I have a skewed sense of colour according to my work colleagues.

I just set it gamma to 0.8, helps just a little with colors on my TFT.
