Internet Problems with Octane

Unread postby OSWebman » Fri Apr 25, 2003 7:16 pm

I just got my new Octane from e-bay, and everything seems to work fine except I think im missing essential programs. My network is up, but I can't find Netscape or any other internet realted programs on this system. I just have the "control panel" the sgi "media" programs and some shell programs. I tried to use FTP to find and download Mozilla. So far I have no luck finding a non-full site that allows me to sign in as guest. Can some one give me some advice on what I can download and from where (ip). I have no "media" and i can not transfer files from one system to another.

If you're just looking for Mozilla, you can download it from SGI:

1.3 release is on SGI Freeware:

http://freeware.sgi.com/index-by-alpha.html

1.4a is on SGI Mozilla page:

http://oss.sgi.com/projects/mozilla/news.html

You can also download Phoenix, Galeon and Skipstone from SGI Freeware.

No offense Neko - read the poor man's message again. He has no Netscape nor something else so you http links are very informative but useless for him :) (alltrough he posted this forum message from somewhere)

Oswebman: try those ftp sites with anonymous/email:

oss.sgi.com in /projects/mozilla/download/irix/1.4a/

freeware.sgi.com in one of the /cd-* dirs

I read the message, but if FTP is working nothing should prevent one from downloading the files with a web browser on a PC and then FTPing them over to the SGI :)

Really? How about nfs? Or samba? I actually use both for file sharing/swaping :) nfs is primarily for backup use though.

hello,

here we go:
--------

# ftp oss.sgi.com (use anonymous as user and something as pass)
ftp>cd projects/mozilla/download/irix/1.4a/
ftp>get fw_mozilla.tardist
ftp>bye
# tar -xvf fw_mozilla.tardist
# swmgr

the rest should be not too hard
