Why not create such a site. Has far has I know, no such icon database exist. we could start building one. I can contribute some of my creation. Lets face it, Irix default icon really look... old.

I could add a page here for it, but I don't have any icons to put on it at the moment.

Speaking of icons...

Unread postby Hakimoto » Fri Apr 18, 2003 4:27 am

You guys are speaking of custom desktop icons, right? What about the icons used for minimised apps? I asked Neko this before, but it´s lost somewhere in my email archives. Could you recap on those?

Just some thoughts, but shouldn't it be possible to write an SVG to FTI converter? They're both vector formats, and they're both documented.

Also, a potentially cool wal to do icons woul dbe to render them with some 3D software and one of those rnedering effects that make them look like they were done as a cartoon, and then use a tracing problem to convert them to 2D vectors.

Good point; there's already a perl script that goes the other way (fti to svg):

http://freshmeat.net/projects/fti2svg.pl

It would be great if it could be adapted :) I emailed the author to see if perhaps this is something he created but never released.

I was thinking the same thing (svg to fti) but I noticed that Irix icons seem to have no curves, only lines. Am I mistaken?

Well I got the following reply back, sounds like there's hope:

I never did get around to that. It's a lot harder to go that way since svg files are much more complex than fti files. To do it properly I'd really need to use a complete xml parser. Actually, I had forgotton about doing it altogether. Maybe I'll take a shot at it this week.

I'm the author of fti2svg.pl. I'm actually going to give writing svg2fti a shot this week, but no promises, it's a lot harder going the other direction (the fti format is MUCH more limited than svg). For the poster who asked about curves. Actually, the fti spec SAYS that you can have curves, and even documents how they are created, but NONE of the stock Irix icons actually use them, and iconsmith gives you no way to draw them, so I don't know if they really work, I'm going to try creating some icons using curves later tonight and see if they display correctly.

Sorry this is taking so long ... I'm waiting until the server move before setting this up and I've been too busy this week to work on it.

Well, I've spent all my free time this week trying to figure out a way to make this work and I just don't see it happening. There are just too many things that you can have in an svg that fti files have NO way of handling. Some of them you can fake in an fti (RGBA->fltk palette), but some you just can't do (unclosed poly lines). Honestly, it's high time SGI updated their desktop, but that's not going to happen. SGI pretty much has abandoned the desktop at this point (at least, from my point of view).

I really don't understand why they don't also support some bitmap format (atleast pixmaps) for the icons as well as their vector format...I mean pixmaps are easy to support and could be scaled also (though uglier)

Personally I'd rather have a desktop of bitmap icons than the vectors they gave us...maybe I'll just have to run something other than fm for my filemanager I suppose...
