Irix was originally (pre 5.0?) based on BSD. Then they moved to SysV later on. I am pretty sure that the source of this information was from my SGI course I did last year, but checking the course handbook I can't verify.

Thanks guys, Ill try that.

Not only did I learn about booting, I learnt about the origins of IRIX :)

The only other thing is :

I need the x_eoe.sw.Xoptfonts package to install gtk on my box. I only have 6 CDS, That Foundations 1 & 2, Overlays 1 2 &3, and Applications. I cant find the package on any of the cds. My options are to get the xoptfonts package of someone and continue unharmed, or to buy a new set of irix CDs and upgrade for 6.5.1 early access in the process! Does anyone know where I can get these CDs and in the meantime can anyone send me the x_eoe.sw.Xoptfonts package.. please?

You can email me at 'gareth at x41 dot net'
