Octane Dual 400. EMXI Card. Arrived. Problem.

Unread postby Intuition » Thu Jan 18, 2018 11:53 pm

Well, a few parts arrived today.

The dual 400mhz proc which I won for $82 on ebay. It was described as never used and did come in a usual sealed processor bag.

The box was pretty mashed up though. There were two connectors slightly bent. The two white square pin inserts on either side were bent towards the middle slightly. I was able to put in just fine.

Also an EMXI with two tram units from Mashek's ebay listing. Also looks like it has never been used.

Well. The EMXI card installed no issues. Booted up and registers.

The dual 400 mhz proc though, did not allow the Octane to boot. I opened it back up.. pulled it out. Inspected it .

Saw that besides the bent pins, the corner of the chip board looked crunched. :/ See pics below.

I tried to manually bend it back and it looked a little cracked.

BUT.. I put it back in and the Octane came up

Ran the hinv when hitting the Irix desktop and it registered as a dual 400 Mhz.

So I figured I would go give it a render test to see how much faster it was with a Lightwave scene. Only Lightwave 5 working at the moment. Still need to install software.

Well, I was changing the desk top colors in the meantime and the Octane just froze up. No mouse movement or anything. Just froze.

I powered it down by pulling the plug as pressing the button did nothing.

Now it wont boot again just like before. If I replace the proc with the single 200mhz it runs fine. So.. something is wrong with the dual 400mhz I think.

Do you think the little corner crack is the culprit? Is it fixable somehow? Guess I could send it back since it was probably damaged in shipping. Hate to see an unused dual 400 proc dead before it ever was used. :/

do you have a strong looking glass or maybe even a microscope? if so check the pins in question.
if they indeed have cracks and are not just bent ... i guess you know

Well the pins on the mobo side are fine.

Its just those pins that are possibly damaged are inside the little rectangle plastic housings. I can kind of see them from the side as they jump from the CPU board into the little plastic guide housings. I'll try and find a looking glass. But, say one is damaged, is it just a solder job? At least I only paid $82 I guess. I just have the worst shipping luck . About every third package over the last 20 years has some serious indication it was basically used as a ballistic weapon before it arrived.

Could it be that the crunched corner is causing trouble? It has two metal circle shaped that are in the area which is mushed.

The PCB is cracked and the internal copper planes are shorting out. It will need to be removed with a grinder and repaired using donor board material.

This is a definite return dude. Some gurus here may be able to fix it but this is beyond the skill of all of us here.

Ok, I tried to flatten out that corner crunch more, not even sure that has anything to do with the problem. But, it did fire up and stay up for a while. It is surviving multiple reboots too.

I ran a render test with the dual 400mhz and it eats up very high settings in Lightwave rather fast. I run on most bells and whistles and am able to push it up to as high as 15 seconds s Frame. Most renders are around 4-8 seconds a frame.

I will say that I can now see what everyone means in that the Octane is more snappy than the o2.

Even the 195mhz proc setup seems to boot and launch things very quickly. To be fair. This Octane has 640mb ram too vs the 256mb ram in o2 400mhz.

Hopefully this thing holds and I’ll be making tuts before too long.

Just saw your two messages. Hmm. Yeah I should probably return. Ian told me he could give me a good price on a dual 400mhz.

Even though I was able to get it running I am betting it’ll be intermittent.

If you decide to keep it, one thing you can do while it's still working is flood the area with CA adhesive (top and bottom). That will shore it up somewhat against flexing and shorting out, but it probably won't be reliable in the long term. Still, it can't hurt anything.

Multilayer board as said before, internal fills are shorting out power and ground together. Should run fine if you can grind off the offending part and file it smooth such that none of the sandwiched layers touch.

I have a working dual 400mhz module if you're interested. Module works but its host cpu board went toast.

now now, don't just stop there. you've just had your taste of a faster system -> dual-600 is the way to go. :)
pick up a V8 or V12 while you're at it.

Well, I only have the Octane 1. So I was informed that a dual 600 requires a newer mobo with updated Xbow.
So I am just maxxing out the Octane for now.

You'll also need a Cherokee PSU for VPro. You'll need a 1.3 Xbow for V6/V8, 1.4 XBow for V10/V12.

Bummer about the damage, you do seem to have a cloud of shipping mishap over your head, hope it moves on quickly! ;)
