SGI Crimson...in Lego

I'd love to have an SGI Crimson, but no room for it in my house. I needed an electronics enclosure for the 3d printer I'm building. I like Lego.

Hmmm....

It is built 1/5 scale (shown next to my 1/4 scale Indigo from Dodoid). Arduino RAMPS boards fit in the bottom, and there is an opening for a fan at the back. I just need to find a laser printer so that I can make some transparent stickers for the front.

I designed this in Lego Digital Designer, so if anyone wants to build their own, shoot me a message and I can send the .lxf file, BoM or build instructions.

Cool!

Let me know if you need a good photo from the front or top to make the logos.

I looks very good

How did you do that if you don't have a real Crimson to take measures from?
The Crimson is of course not a difficult shape, but it looks like you have the
proportions correct with the grey band and the skirt and everything.

Did you just happen to have all the correct pieces and correct colors :-)?

I think I have to take a look at that Lego Digital Designer. I'm getting inspired...

There are plenty of good pictures of Crimsons and Crimson-like cases out there. I'm sure proportions could come from one of those.

Exactly - I just measured based on pics. It's not 100% accurate down to the mm, but with Lego nothing ever is

For those Lego pieces I didn't have, I ordered through BrickLink.

Of course. I didn't think of that. A deskside Onyx could has the same proportions.

I was thinking of building a Lego (Origin 2000) out of Lego :-)
With a 1/5 scale it would be a 37-38cm (15 inch) high piece. Put an Odriod XU4 into it and you have 8 cores and graphics, an "Onyx2".

I will check out BrickLink or similar.

I have contemplated making minis of the big SGIs. My 3D printer is in theory big enough, but the print time and bed adhesion/warping factors make it too complex right now for anything but a one-off. Maybe if I get a better printer.
