Picked up O2+ on eBay.

Unread postby Vanne » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:12 pm

So I was trawling eBay yesterday for something to do and came across a purple O2+

I've had about 5 blue o2's, mostly the 180mhz ones , but never a purple o2. This one comes with the r5k300, but I have a moose head board in my possession with the r10k175, I wonder which will be faster?

The purple skins on the o2, look like they have some scratches on them, Iam also wondering how hard it will be to restore them?

I payed 250 for the system, diskless, but I have a few sca disks lying around here, so no dramas there.

I also have a sw1600, which I have yet to test, couldent get it to go with my Fuel. (That I recently sold) so hopefully it will work with the o2+

Any idea how rare these systems are? It's been a long time since I've seen a purple o2 people eater.

Cheers

V.

If yours has the 030-1327-002 motherboard then you're in luck as these are quite rare.
No SGI box currently...Snif! Pm me if you have an unwanted SGI box in the UK pls.

Ah man. You got that O2+. I've been badgering a friend to buy that as his first SGI. What a good deal. Glad it's got a good home.

Aren't the moosehead mobos wider? Meaning it wont fit the chassis? Or do you have the chassis too?

You can have a Moosehead in an O2 case. I think you just loose the extra drive bay.

Yeah you just loose the extra drive bay.. can't wait to get it and see what actual shape this one is in. Lol how funny is that, it matches my avatar.. always wanted a purple one, though could never afford it while they were in season.

What will be faster the r5k300 that's in there or the r12k300 that I've got lying around?

This chart off Ian's website gives you some kind of idea of the performance difference between these CPU's:

Note that this doesn't indicate the performance difference in all scenario's.

The R12K is significantly more powerful, given that they both run at the same clock speed.

You're not going to be able to swap the R12k in easily though.

The R12k is a bigger module. You need a different mainboard tray to accommodate it, and those are hard/expensive to find.

You won't be able to fit the R12K CPU module to an R5K motherboard. (they are quite different)

As far as I know, you won't be able to fit an R10K motherboard into an R5K O2 without some required modification to the inner case.
If the divider for the hard drive bay that needs to be removed comes out easily, then you're in business, it appears to be riveted into place though. (you can always drill the rivets though)

R5000 inner case:

R10K inner case:

Notice the difference.

If you want to make use of the R12K, then I would advise that you look at acquiring a cheap beaten-up R10K O2, which works and then fit the O2+'s plastics onto that machine and upgrade it to the R12K spec.

I have a R12K moosehead board in my possession. If I drill the harddrive bay out, that's all that should be required right?

Drilling is only necessary for the oldest of R5000 O2's. Newer R5K O2's had a removable divider. You will probably have to remove the bottom skin piece, and messing with the skins of an O2 without breaking something can be a challenge.
