Thinking about it now, I almost wonder if it wasn't an early Roland of some description, back before they were using integrated VCFs (no idea what Reznor's studio looked like at the time, but...) My SH-09's filter manages to conjure up a little grit and grunge not present in the input when the resonance is a ways up and the cutoff is low, and that sound effect seems very reminiscent of that to my ears.

yes? not to be obtuse, but where? the audio software list is tantalizing, but 99% of these links are dead. vintage mac has places like the macintoshgarden for abandonware. is there no repository for irix stuff like that? ill try to begin tracking these things down individually from places like IRCAM.
