So at some point, I'll have to spend a dull weekend splitting the patch up into discrete pieces, which is sometimes more of a chore w/ git than one might think (though, I am probably using git wrong).

git commit -p and git rebase -i are your friends. And your foes, too.

git-gui might be also helpful for splitting up a big patch into smaller ones. There one can stage singular or multiple lines that should be included in a single commit.
