uunix: It seems that is a linux rdesktop problem too if you do some google searches. There are some gpedit.msc or registry mods that 'limit' the max color depth but what we need is a minimum setting and not a max, however many others online seem to say that fixed it for them (no luck for me).

I do find that i can use "-a 32" and get 32bit from nekoware's rdesktop, but the colors come out wrong since my IRIX desktop is 24bit.

FYI, Windows XP and Server 2003 seem to be locked in at 16bpp max though. Windows 7+ can go to 24bit or 32bit.

However, I can connect with rdesktop at 24bit if connecting to a VirtualBox remote display connection. VirtualBox lets you display the console of a VM over RDP. So applications that require 24bit will, and do, work this way.. however I did not verify if you are really visually seeing 24bit or not (my eyes are not a graphic designer's eyes so sometimes I cannot tell between 16bit and 24bit). The nekoware rdesktop command did not complain about 24bit not avail and stepping down to 16bit this way.. so I am assuming it is connecting at 24bit.

Don't own any SGI at the moment but at least my Sun-4/75 and PCD-4H, both with Solaris 2.4.
Because both are located in different cities, I power on the available machine once a week.
I had to reinstall Solaris on my PCD-4H because got problems after patching without backups. I have to find the stumbling stone (patch) which destroys the German keymap in a way so that the X Server not come up anymore. - Not this time. :D

Well, I've had my Fuel and Indigo2 both on during the last week, in fact the Indigo2 is on right now playing music. For some reason, it does sound better than my PC for music. Also been trying to compile some XMMS plugins with varying degrees of success...

I think so. And the Indy is better than the O2 (I don't have the Indigo2 and my R3k Indigo cannot play mp3 files).

That must be a noisy/cosy room!

My room is toasty enough with just my Indigo2 and PC on at the moment :)

My Origin2000 and Onyx are in my bedroom, under my desk. Right now the Fuel is also in there, in one of my "roughly ATX sized" tower piles. Then there's the bedside O2:

I usually keep a good array of computer stuff next to my bed (the dock for my ThinkPad X220 goes there, as does my T60 Kronos dev box sometimes, and recently a PowerBook G4 I'm setting up to sell), so I figured an IRIX box wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Cleared off the bedside table. When I want to sleep there, I move the keyboard to resting on top of a drawer on my bedside table and the mouse to beside the monitor. My phone, the only really important thing that ever sat on that table, sits on the monitor stand, and the lamp sits on top of the O2. I don't have to be able to reach the lamp from the bed, as it's controlled by an X10 timer across the room. I did confusedly brush the monitor with my hand upon waking up the first night I slept with it there, but I have yet to knock anything down. Barely fits, but does.

Wow, I think my wife would have a fit if I tried to install my O2 onto my bedside table :D

What about an O2 under the bed and a projector onto the ceiling :D ? You could use one of those pocket size wireless keyboard+trackpad combos designed for home theaters.

At any given time in my house there will be 5-7 SGIs running and granted most are doing nothing but the screensaver but they are alive. Any graphics station will have my kid or one of his friends playing the demo games. It is fun to watch them pass the xbox one and go play cycles or doom. I have my own hardware test team. :)

Personally I am a software rock barely able to use MAYA, now I have a Smoke/ Flame setup and some manuals so I may play more. Love these machines and have gotten pretty good at the hardware.

Impossible! Even my i486DX2 could play mp3 files. Something really went wrong with your configuration, I suppose. ;)

PS. Dodoid, that bedside O2 is awesome. :D

I'd use my SGIs a lot more, but as others have said the browser issue is a biggy, and my Tezro is too loud, also takes too long to start up for quicky tasks. I find I care more about noise levels these days; HTPC is silent and just sips away the power.

Has anyone setup a NAS for use with both SGIs and PCs, etc.? Atm my main SGI user account is on an SSD connected to a Tezro. If there was a way of making it so any system could access it easily then I could use the O2 a lot more (I'd lose the lovely fast native access to the Tezro, but it would be more generally useful). Still though, for web browsing and other general stuff, I've a 5GHz 2700K, a 6850K for editing, and I'm building four PCs for people atm. If we ever get time travel, I ain't going back, the 1990s me would throw something at me... :} Then I'd tell me/him that I hold some of the 3DMark records and my/his head would explode. :D

Ian.

My Pentium 75 could play MP3 under Windows 95 only if I would go to the codec settings in control panel and reduce decoding quality (I don't remember exactly the name of the flag).
In DOS, I could play fine.

I boot up my O2 every now and again to just play around with, although not too often.

My O200 mostly stays turned off, it's just so loud and big to be practical for use in the house. My Indy is hanging around also, but the O2 is more usable.
