Was already watching it. About half way through.

Actually what I didn't know until today, even having watched these vids individually, was that the 540 workstation intel machines were capable of being a quad cpu setup. That's pretty serious hardware for the time. For me that would have been a serious selling point since rendering would be four times a single cpu workstation.

Probably priced ridiculous via SGI price ranges though.

Ian tells of an experiment in which a 540 was outfitted with specially designed, large cache Xeon prototypes and benchmarked against an Onyx2. It was very close.

Great job! I was thrilled to see blip Linux Networx as I used to work there before they got acquired by SGI. Bo Ewald was a really great guy. I think he's at D-Wave now. Some of LNXI's technology actually made it into the Altix ICE systems. It was alot of fun. I still have a hang-over from being laid off.

Well, how could you talk about SGI getting Bo Ewald without mentioning the company that came with him .

Rumor is SGI bought LNXI just for Bo. The tech was just an added bonus. Very smart guy with a great passion for HPC. Down to earth also. He had an office just like everyone else's - nothing fancy.

But yeah, if you look at the Altix UV-1000, all the nodes are vertical, that was an LNXI thing and so is all the power management stuff across the Altix line. I think the cluster management tools might have come from LNXI. I don't know that for sure. It's been years since I've talked to anyone who went over to SGI (and there weren't many)

There is very little "good video coverage" of these great machines on YouTube to spark peoples interest. Its great to see what you've done, and judging by the number of views that your videos have had in such a short time, it definitely shows that they are helping to spark peoples interest in Silicon Graphics.
