I'm having a beer...so that says alot.

But I want to thank you guys for all your help! You are the nicest guys I've come across online in...quite a while.

I'm not really new to SGIs. I had an Indigo back when they were very very first going on the used market. I so miss that machine, and I'm glad to get back into SGI machines. As a kid I didn't quite jack-off to SGI ads....but very close. I have a fond love for them, like most of us do.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone for helping me get back into the hobby. You all rock!! :D :D :D

They're great systems, and sorry about your smashed up O2. You should still able to use the "shiny innards" until the new parts machine arrives :) .

Yeah! We'll see what state this new one is in. It's too bad even the base to the one I just got was smashed, or else I'd give it to Raion-Fox.

Don't worry about me. I got money. I don't have a lot, but I'm definitely financially better off than you mentioned in our messages. You don't need to trouble yourself with my problems, I'll figure it out.

You gotta be doing better than me if you can afford a Fuel! :P

I feel like even saving up $400 might not be enough.

For a Fuel? I paid $1100 for my Fuel with the 900MHz card. You can find one for $400 or less if you go for a 600-500MHz one. Octanes are better though at the low range

I paid $125 (Canadian, so that's like 92 USD) for my Fuel, but it's missing quite a lot. Already got it a new Dallas chip (old one wasn't there), still need ATX -> Fuel PSU adapter and graphics board (V10). Other than that though, it has CPU, RAM, and even a (albeit somewhat small) hard drive.

The seller (UnixHQ, I made a video about them) also found me through my YouTube channel, so I think I probably got a good deal. Can recommend them, for anyone looking for SGIs in the Toronto area.

Wouldn't do any good for me being an American, but a missing PSU wouldn't bother me since I plan on using an ATX converter anyway...

Guess it's time to start saving though!

PSUs are currently the main sticking point, but kubatyszko's ATX adapters should make a big difference here. Ian Mapleson practically doubled all his Fuel prices a couple of years ago after almost completely running out of PSUs (thankfully I bought mine from him a couple of weeks before the price-hike). It still wasn't exactly cheap (around £600), but it was affordable enough for me, and I knew I was getting a fully complete system (with lots of nice software etc) on it. Plus I always wanted a Fuel :)

I have two FUELS, of which I think I paid collectively £600 (one was £400, the other £200 iirc). I have found them a pleasure to use, extremely nippy at most tasks especially desktop apps. One FUEL is very well spec'd, the other not so.

Where I feel it falls down, for me anyway, is the damn v10 which isn't that good, and I have found it causes issues with Maya (Fuel+V10+Maya). I have managed to get the main discreet apps running on them, but video capture is pretty none existence and I have to use the wire+tap to get media from my discreet Octane and that process is a bit flaky at times.

For day to day usage though, the FUEL's are the ones I turn on.
