15th Birthday of the SGI Fuel

Unread postby Dodoid » Sun Jan 29, 2017 4:21 pm

The Fuel was announced by press release on January 29th, 2002, exactly 15 years ago today. I've got mine just in time! I know that Fuels are still serving as many of our main SGIs, so I figured it would be worth posting that it's 15 years old. Still a supported product, too!

Also fun: Read the Nekochan posts from when the Tezro released (search for Tezro and click to the last page). Interesting to see what we (not including me, obviously) were saying about it at the time! Sadly, the Fuel seems to be older than this forum.

As others have said, it seemed like by the time the Fuel was shipped SGI had already decided to end IRIX/MIPS in favor of Linux/IA-64. Fuel was more of a stop gap imo. They could have really made a successor to the Octane with it and given it an upgraded VPro and Dual CPUs to coincide with the upgraded internal scsi among other things.

Sadly we'll never know what a fully committed SGI could have produced instead.

yeah coming from ip27/30 the fuel was quite lame. pretty much a peecee with a mips cpu. as it turned out later the quality was not on par either.
i remember at the cebit when they introduced the 4mb cache models ... supposed to give a 20% boost in certain areas. in fairness tho, the price was a steal for sgi standards so some cut-backs were to be expected.

anyway probably more important is that the octane turns 20 this year :-)

It might have looked like a PC on the outside, but the inside is totally SGI. It's basically a single node/single CPU Origin.

Yup and despite the age, mine is still going without any apparent issues.

i know, and it showed that this generation was the last mips based.

Happy birthday Fuel!

Mine has had a few odd flaky issues, but it's been working rock solid for the last year since I replaced both batteries in it (and reseated the V10).
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

It's also the 15th birthday (roughly) of my Octane II. :)
