Project Update Thread: Miniature Indigos

Unread postby Dodoid » Fri Sep 30, 2016 7:32 am

Hi Nekochan,

Lately, I have been working on building functional tiny SGIs consisting of 3D printed cases and ODROID Linux SBCs (I choose these over Pis because the ODROID-XU4 is multiple times as fast as the Pi 2). I'm starting with the original Indigo, and hope to make more in order (Mini Indy and Indigo2, then Mini O2 and Octane, etc). Best of all, if moderators approve it, which I'm still waiting on, you will be able to buy your own tiny SGI through Nekochan for use as a tiny desktop computer, media player, desk ornament, server, or whatever you want. I thought I would make a separate thread, as the other one served to ask whether I can sell them and this one serves as an update thread for the project. Yesterday, the prototype designated IG-PT-02 (Indigo Prototype 2) was completed. It was printed in the colour I had on hand, a (relatively poor quality) translucent light blue (see photos). I also recieved the Indigo-coloured filament, and have completed the door (also pictured), the top portion, and part of the body (the printer is still working on it) for the correctly coloured IG-PT-03.

EDIT: Depending on interest in the workstations, once I reach the Tezro, I may start back at the beginning and do desksides (Crimson -> Onyx4). This will require a larger 3D printer, but my current one is borrowed from a friend and I plan to buy my own once I have to give it back, so I will make sure to get one that can make bigger machines.

Nice!

I don't think you have anything to worry about, your parts can't conceivably violate SGI's IP in any way...

I guess all the exterior design patents are expired, and this one is completely different internally and in software (layout isn't even remotely the same, runs Linux on ARM).

SGI's intellectual property for that design began on 23 November, 1993, and expired 23 November, 2007.

Yep, I've already checked those. Does anyone know when the Tezro and Fuel patents expire? I know the Octane is fair game.

I looked at the little oDroid boards you mentioned. Pretty neat.

I see it has cpu, ram, etc but... where does the hard drive reside?
Image O2 - R12K-300 Mhz, 36 GB HD, 384 MB-RAM

The ODROID can use either a MicroSD card (which is slow) or a much faster open source but as of now only made by them solid state storage module that attaches to the bottom.

IG-PT-03 is mostly finished, it doesn't quite fit together due to a simple design flaw I should be able to fix with a dremel and avoid in future prints. Will upload pictures once I can put it together.

Nice! Can't see too well but did you elect to flatten out the air intakes on the front panel and vanes on the sides of the lower body?

I opted to remove them in order to make the print easier (in my design, the front of the Indigo is printed standing up and attached to the body, so there would be a lot of overhangs to figure out), and to look cleaner at a small scale, but if people can't stand to see an Indigo without vent holes, I could try to design them in. Funny that I can design in a fully working door but the hard part is making some plastic grooves.

Here are pictures of IG-PT-03, along with a smaller version with no door movement, the printer, and a 3D printed SGI logo.

You've done a fine job. I think the vents/vanes will be personal preference. I elected to keep them in the 3D printed version I did and the all-metal chassis. The latter, of course, was an exact duplicate of the Indigo and not 3D printed, so it was a different story. But the 3D printed version did ok with the intakes.

I use SketchUp too. Mine is a little different as it has a functioning door, so it has to be built in multiple pieces.

Alright, it's been a while since the last post, but I have finally finished IN-PT-04.

2016-10-11 21.06.04.jpg

Front looks the same, door still works like normal. Top of lid looks a little crap, don't know what happened to the printer, but the piece I printed right afterwards is fine. I won't waste a perfectly good lid, it's on a prototype after all and the focus of this version is not aesthetic improvements.

2016-10-11 21.06.15.jpg

But on the back, we have ports! IN-PT-04 is the first version with support for the ODROID-XU4, and the four plastic clips that hold the PCB in place (trying hard for screwless design) also help keep the case together. Much more work needs to be done, but we are now approaching a sellable product!

IN-PT-04 has been running as my home server for a while now. I am working on fine tuning designs and planning decals to go on the front. Until I get those, enjoy this render made from my models (should look like the real one).
