2nd O2 arrived all destroyed. :(

Unread postby Intuition » Mon Sep 26, 2016 5:35 pm

I had parts for a second O2 delivering this week. The main unit arrived. It is a R10k 195 Mhz 256 RAM unit.

No HD or sled.

I ordered...

400 MHZ R12k proc
HD sled.
Video card cartridge upgrade (to replace usual audio unit).
Keyboard and mouse
1600sw
adapter to plug SW directly to back of O2

Sadly the unit's plastics are decimated. I always have bad luck with us postal service (waves had to sky)

I am contacting Ian at the Depot to see if he has good spare plastics.

The CD rom bezel looks fine but it is probably broken at the connector points.
Top black lid is one piece but the tab doesn't hold it.

Black base is cracked in half as is the blue shroud.

It does boot up to the OS screen though.

This was/is going to be an upgrade VID. Now it is going to be a restoration/upgrade youtube vid.

Ouch, that's sad.
I'm not sure that it's worth trying to fix the plastics if they are that damaged. It is possible, but there will always be visible defects (like the missing chip to the left of the cube logo).

Yeah I sent an email to Ian to see if he still has some extra orig logo O2 skins around.

I am sure I could salvage the base with a heat gun as the crack is clean. The blue shroud is pretty gone. I'd have to melt the little bits for quite some time to get them to seal up... but that missing bit.. OUCH.

EDIT...---found the little missing plastic bit in the box....HMM... heatgun/plastic welder time?

That really sucks. People just don't seem to care anymore. Was it just thrown in a box with some peanuts?

Yeah it was in a box with a bunch of Styrofoam wedges. The main culprit here though is the US postal service.
This is the 9th thing in ten years they have destroyed. Usually I insist on UPS or fed ex because they haven't successfully sent me a package yet without damage in a decade. Vinyl records. CDs. vintage board games in mint condition.. ALL completely mashed and destroyed by the time I pick it up.

Since I am getting a possible replacement shroud I will see if I can salvage this one just as a test run. I am watching lots of plastic weld and repair tutorials. What ever I do I will document if it is even slightly successful. The computer starts and chimes and is strangely very quiet for an O2. I think this one may already be a fan mod in the power supply. Its easily 80% more quiet than my 300 Mhz o2.

-------EDIT------------

Found the custom O2 case thread here.
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=16725453

I am thinking of fixing the shroud / covers /base manually and then doing a custom paint color.

Glossy black with white base and top plastic?
Matte black etc etc?
Glossy white w/Black classic silicon graphics text below the cube logo?
Matte white etc etc ?

Lots of interesting ideas brewing now.

Rest assured though, its staying an Irix O2 with classic SGi software. ;)

I'd assume SGi plastics are ABS? Might be better to do a chemical weld like acetone or weld on vs heat. Then I can use filler and sand smooth before painting.

On the "General and Platform Demos" CD are exact CAD-models for the O2. Perhaps in the near future we can 3D-Print the plastics...

Hmm, not a bad idea. But, how to pull it off?

I am leaning towards white case with black "silicon graphics" text made with printing the eps I have.
Black top and black base.

Hmm. Does anyone have this 3D model here already? I could do a render of the different schemes before starting?

It could be here as open inventor file:
https://archive.org/details/sgi_O2_Demos_1.1.1_for_IRIX_6.3_Including_R10000
Or on an IRIX CD-Set on general and Platform demos 2/2

Demo "Cromeskins", open, o2.mostcomplete.iv or something. Currently I'm away from my SGIs...
