Tezro sold for under $600

Unread postby japes » Fri Jul 15, 2016 2:07 pm

Congrats on a reasonably priced Tezro to someone here? http://www.ebay.com/itm/351778681644

It looks pretty nice, but I couldn't tell what the CPU was.

I asked the seller about the type of mainboard (4 or 8 pci-x) and the type of cpu-module (1,2 or 4 cpu), but never got an answer.
He advertised the Tezro as quad system, but I'm not so sure about that since the machine did not have one single pci-x card except
the io9 which is required.

I dunno, that seems like a lot for a Tez with beat-to-shit skins and unknown innards. I got mine with mint skins, a known-good quad 700, a DCD and a DM3 for $1000 (USD). Still felt like I overpaid but rationalized it because there was no shipping cost, it was being sold by a recycler only a couple of miles from where I work...

Temporarily lost at sea...

World domination! Or something...

I took a gamble bid on the system, I lost - but it seemed like a worthy gamble for me when under $500. I'm glad I got outbid, I am out of room at my home, had to take some gear to work which is currently sitting with me in my cube - I really need to start selling stuff but I just can't seem to pull the trigger...

I bid on this as well. But I wasn't going above $475 for something questionable with rubbish skins. :-|

There is an interesting Octane up right now. Seems a bit high but I am not sure what the value of V12 DCD X2 really is coupled with the dual 600.

Clean, working, dual 600 with factory dual V12 and two DCDs? If it isn't sold at that price, it should have no trouble staying above $1,000...

So what exactly can one do with an octane2 with 4 displays other than bragrights?

I suppose this was considered a 2-seat solution where every user has 2 displays. This machines has already the pcicage, so the only
part missing is an io3-card.

it's been a while i ran an octane but the dual-v12 would seem like fastfan-fun all the time? i've only enabled that setting once to check it out and - my god! . impossible to work with the machine in the same room.

Today? Not relevant. Better question: How likely was a consumer-buildable PC to handle four high-res screens when this was shipped by SGI? That's the question that might explain why this made sense as a packaged product.

VPro V10/V12 were announced in early 2001, and the Octane2 was withdrawn in 2004, so the question applies to PCs from 2002-2004 (assuming anybody cares at this point...)

To be honest, I seem to recall the consumer PC market was "completely" destroying the sgi workstation class at that point on performance. I can't speak of the big iron stuff but I recall it was very gloomy at that point in the sgi newsgroups and fourms here..

edit: by completely I mean on the apps that were actually available on both sgi and PC for comparison

I believe it, but could you get that performance from more than one head on a PC? Could you get past dual head displays with mid-range cards?

I'm not being OMGSGI fanboi about this, just wondering if this wasn't something it was still tough to do on the PC side. PCIe was only introduced in 2003, so you're looking at what, multiple PCI cards? One AGP card? Maybe AGP Pro, if you limit your choices?

I think the discreet stuff was still SGI at that point, so that was a plus for SGI - but not dual V12 I dont think. There might have been some government stuff or in-house stuff in some places that didn't get ported to x86 yet so they were stuck with SGI but from the rare-ness of the dual V12 card carrier I dont know how much of that was the case.

I mean dont get me wrong, I think having 4 displays is still awesome but I was wondering if there was some sort of cave/multi-pipe app that would have been sweet on both a Onyx and Octane2. I was thinking maybe military simulator development on a multi-head/pipe Octane2 that was going to run full balls on a Onyx2 :)
