What did Octane 2's sell for?

Unread postby Vladio » Thu Jul 16, 2015 10:58 am

I've searched through a half dozen pages looking for what Octane 2's sold for. Anyone know? I'd love to know both msrp and street but would take either.

Just curious. Thanks.

'Street' is not a simple calculation: they were only available through authorized resellers, and the amount of discount you got depended a lot on who you were and which system you ordered.

in 2005, an SGI reseller would have listed these prices for refurbished Octane2s:

$10,995 WT5-2P600V12-536 - Ref SGI Octane2 V12, R14K 2x600MHz, 512MB, 36GB
$3,495 WT5-1P400V12-536 - Ref SGI Octane2 V12, R12K 400MHz, 512MB, 36GB
$1,995 WT5-1P360V6-518 - Ref SGI Octane2 V6, R12K 360MHz, 512MB, 18GB
$1,295 WT5-1P300SE18 - Ref SGI Octane SE, R12K 300MHz, 512MB, 18GB
$400 WT5-BASE-004 - Ref SGI Octane2 Base System

But the system was discontinued at the end of 2004, so these were stock-clearing prices.

Thanks, I'm just looking for an idea of what an Octane 2 would of cost me when it first came out and was new. I have a printing company and have a good idea of pricing between consumer and commercial, authorized retailers and online seller... knowing the average Octane user wasn't an average computer user, by street I mean what I would of paid to have one in my design department. Let's not over complicate things. ;) Heck, and msrp would be fine. :)

According to my sources, Octane2 prices in late 2001 ranged between the following:

Octane2, V6, 1x360MHz, 256MB RAM, 9GB 10K HDD, 21" monitor for $17,495 MSRP.
Octane2, V12, 2x400MHz, 512MB RAM, 18GB 10K HDD, 21" monitor, DMedia options for $71,445 MSRP.

Without DMedia, the price of the last one dropped by about $30,000!

If you actually paid that, people would walk up to you on the street and give you a great big lick, cuz you had "SUCKER !!" printed in ten-inch letters on your forehead.

There's a full price list from 2006 posted (as a pdf) here: http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16728414

No Octane systems in the list because Octanes were discontinued after 2004, but there are prices for the Octane accessories that they were still offering. Some of those numbers are a bit out there...

Awesome, Vishnu! We're camping this weekend but I have cell service. Can't wait to make a hotspot and look over those prices tonight on an ipad (my eye sight isn't what it used to be  ).

512MB.. !!

And still 512MB on the dual-600/V12 machine in the clearance stock list.

Makes me suspect RAM was one of the "out there"-priced accessories!
Fuel; Indigo2; Inspiron 531 WinXP/Win10/debian-buster; Inspiron 4100 debian-buster; RiscPC Kinetic/448MB/RISCOS4.39; RPi B/256MB RISCOS5.23; RPi2 Raspbian-buster; A5000/33MHz/FPA11/8MB/RISCOS3.11; A540/25MHz/FPA10/16MB/RISCOS3.11 or RISCiX1.21

Indeed. What I've seen (from November, 2001) were the following for Octane RAM:

256MB: $1000
512MB: $2000
1024MB: $4500
2048MB: $13500

Each of those prices is for a kit to fill one bank of the four in the Octane. Keep in mind that those are list prices and most (if not all) customers would receive a hefty discount. But still....

Keep in mind that a Facit 4070 tape punch was $4,000 in 1975. No 50% discounts, either. And an IBM Selectric was $1500. That was real money, too. A Sportster was $1200 and a new Ford van was under $3000. A brand new loaded 1978 Fiesta was $3750. My dumb (3.4 mhz) Vectra (no suffix, the original one) was $4600. Yet a nice house was about $50,000. A few years earlier (1965) a very nice house was $24,000.

You can't really compare olden dayes prices with anything. It's meaningless. The economy was structured entirely differently.

If you want to look at this with a jaundiced eye, the banksters have manipulated things so that you will never own anything except cheap junk that wears out in five years (and needs replacing, again feeding into their pockets.) The important things, those they own forever and you just get to make payments. For your entire life. They had a revolt about this in 1380. At least the peasants were realists.

Was offhand listening to right wing rabble rouser radio at work today and I probably don't remember the numbers right but they were saying that the entire US stock market in 1980 was worth something like 1 trillion dollars, and today it's worth something like 60 trillion. A trillion here a trillion there pretty soon you're talking about real money!
