Folks,

In this great document:
http://www.wiwd.uscourts.gov/opinions/pdfs/2006-2009/06-C-611-C-01-30-08.PDF

Code: Select all

"IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE WESTERN DISTRICT OF WISCONSIN"
"SGI vs. ATI/AMD"

is mentioned about the "Bali" framebuffer, I would like to have more information about this project, would you be able to share some pointers, such as:

- what architecture.
- hardware targeted.
- etc.

Thanks!
Mia

I guess it was the successor to InfiniteReality, which became the ATI based Voyager:
SGI still intends to lead in the production of high-end systems for visualizing complex computer models, Kelly said, but has decided to do that by using other broadly available graphics chips instead of designing its own. To that end, the company has canceled work on custom chips for its "Bali" project for top-end graphics machines, laying off or transferring about a quarter of the people involved, said Drew Henry, general manager of the visual solutions business unit.

So IR4 == Bali? I'm confused.

InfiniteReality4 was based on the same basic chips as other IRs, just with some speed-bumped and with more memory.

Looks like Bali was to be to IR what ODYSSEY was to IMPACT.
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

Living proof that you can't keep a blithering idiot down.

The codename matches, maybe it was the same guy who vacationed in Hawaii during IR development later went to Indonesia...

Code: Select all

Maradona 13# hinv -vm
Graphics board: InfiniteReality
...

Maradona 15# /usr/gfx/gfxinfo
Graphics board 0 is "KONAS" graphics.

We bought an Onyx4 with ATI crap graphics. It was a mess. We later retrofitted the machine to IR4---a huge imporvement.
