Heh, that's what everyone said in 1999 :)

well... not quite the same. however, is still doesn't look like anyone's then little brother would be proud today.

So, aside from simply bringing back the old cube as it once was, what would you guys have wanted to see as a new logo?

(Personally, while I love the old cube logo, and it still makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, I also think that it starts to look a little dated in 2009. I'm neither an artist nor a marketing exec, but if I were either, I might try to "reboot" the cube in some way. Hey, rebooting worked for the Battlestar Galactica and Trek franchises...)

If I were tasked to pick something completely new, I'd go back to Scott Kim (creator of the original hypercube) and see what he could dream up involving the "sgi" lettering.

Scott Kim FAQ wrote: My logos generally involve clever tricks with lettering, which are most appropriate when the subject matter is itself tricky, paradoxical or contains some sort of double meaning. My lettering style works best if you have customers in engineering, who enjoy intellectual humor, in entertainment or education, who enjoy visual play, or in the arts, who enjoy graphic invention.

*dons his asbestos longjohns* I know I promised to shut up, but I just had my first shot of expresso of the morning.

Something similar to what SBC did when they bought AT&T. They refreshed the logo and made it their own, but made it recognizable as the famous mark it used to be.

A branding change can be a positive thing, if it looks like you took time and care with it. An example I'd like to cite is Sprint Nextel, which has a really nice writeup from BusinessWeek here.

Reading that BusinessWeek writeup on Sprint Nextel made me realize the thing I hate most about the new SGI logo: The blue and green they've chosen, while Rackable's colors, are pretty standard in the industry. The blue reminds me too much of Dell and HP's logos. The violet and silver SGI had established for themselves was striking and unique.

If they bring back some level of support for Irix they can write "SGI" in dog poop on the sidewalk out front and I'd still cheer for them.. Beauty is as beauty does.

I particularly like how the letters in "results." don't line up. Notice how the 'u' is lower than the 's'.

That's a sweeping generalization. Some people buy BMWs for status. Many people buy BMWs because of their stellar performance.

They need to use lower-case to represent the lack of capital.

I refused a company name tag for my office space because it didn't use capitals on my name. :D

Seriously though, why would a tech company design their logo around a color scheme that is ubiquitous on feminine hygiene products? "Maxi pads" and "dentist's office" were the first things that came to mind when I saw the new sgi logo.

What is the deal with refusals to use proper capitalization nowadays? When e.e. cummings did it it was slightly irritating but unique. When everybody does it and attempts to pass it of as "hip professional" it just looks like it was done by a bunch of idiots.
