Something similar to what SBC did when they bought AT&T. They refreshed the logo and made it their own, but made it recognizable as the famous mark it used to be.
A branding change can be a positive thing, if it looks like you took time and care with it. An example I'd like to cite is Sprint Nextel, which has a really nice writeup from BusinessWeek here
Reading that BusinessWeek writeup on Sprint Nextel made me realize the thing I hate most about the new SGI logo: The blue and green they've chosen, while Rackable's colors, are pretty standard in the industry. The blue reminds me too much of Dell and HP's logos. The violet and silver SGI had established for themselves was striking and unique.
