SGI back from the dead (read: Chapter 11)!!!

Unread postby mia » Fri Oct 13, 2006 7:16 pm

Alright, we didn't have a lot of good news in a while on the SGI front, so here it comes: SGI will emerge from Chapter 11 in less than 30 days!

After a harsh reorganization of SGI, SGI is back, and stronger than what it was, they have moved their HQ and renegociated with their tenants (who said GOOG?). This is VERY good news and I wanted to share it with you. And this is from a very reliable source.

That makes me super happy, I sure hope you'd like that, this is not a joke, this is real, they've done a great job, and this Chapter 11 turned out to be what SGI needed after all.

This is not a joke, in 30 days from now SGI will be out of Chapter 11, and back in business, I've learnt that today from someone I trust whom works at SGI.

Yes I am, it doesn't mean that SGI will be rolling on gold nuggets, it just means that they'll be back in business, and out of chapter 11, it also means that they're not going away, not just yet, not that easily.

I am serious on that one, I wouldn't joke on that.

It also means that the company will be re-listed at NYSE?

Probably not for a while, although I don't know, my friend didn't mention this, I don't know what are the criterias to be listed or relisted at NYSE.

They won't be "back in business" because they have never been "out of business."

However, for all those here who are staunch believers in kapitalism they should be permanently out of business.

They have done absolutely nothing right for ten years. They fucked up everything they've touched. They deserve to be out of business. This is that famous Law of the Marketplace stuff you kapitalists love so well.

What they did was get one of those do-gooder Liberal institutions to legally disavow all their debts. In plain English that means they legally told all the people to whom they owed money to go fuck off.

Now that they have some do-gooder Liberal court's approval, they are wantonly destroying a million dollars' worth of equipment that should have gone to pay off the people who innocently trusted SGI. The fact that this will fuck over many of their previous customers doesn't bother them in the least. The fact that this money should have gone to pay off debts doesn't bother them. They are "looking to the future" when available cheap Irix computers would make it more difficult to sell their overpriced commodity Linux junk. Paying their debts would be "looking to the past" and oh so old-fashioned.

All they are doing is screwing people then making pompous proclamations about how the future is so bright they gotta wear shades. Then they will continue to do exactly the same thing until there is no one on Earth left to screw. What a bunch of shitheads.

This is a sad ending to what was possibly the most innovative, creative company in the history of computing. It's enough to make you throw up. Kapitalism, yeah right. Why don't y'all try it some day instead of this Socialism for the business class while everyone else gets to struggle for every penny ?

I don't have any nice explanation to tell... it is just that all these thing about SGI crushing those boxes, some of them brand-new, makes me feel so sad... I don't know... I've worked developing those little apps on IRIX for my customers since about five/six years, and I could not say that it means for me a financial success... then I've worked really hard on latest three years, with the hope to bring to my country an Origin2000/Onyx2 deskside, and I've never really enjoyed of enough spare money to cover the customhouse fees to have it imported... so... it just feels wrong.

I was asking good money to each one of my local customers to provide to them all with technical support, programming services, spares, accessories, peripherals, second-hand SGI boxes from countries like U.S.A. or Canada, etc... now, how could I honestly promote the sales for an older platform which will cost them more than any last generation brand-new (PeeCee) option, when SGI is just recycling five hundreed Tezro(s) for the sake of their financial report?

I've asked them a little sponsorship to allow me to continue my work for the non linear editing app, and they refused to do it; in fact they email of reply was just the offer from a sales rep trying to sell me a Prism...

It just feels so wrong... also, add to this, they are just crushing those expensive boxes which right now I could not afford to buy even from a second-hand reseller... so, why should I care to develop for a company that never cares about us?

I don't know. It just feels wrong. Heck!, if they don't want to support my project because they don't find it interesting, then they could just give some boxes here between the nekochanners to allow them to write/port more apps... there is plenty of talented people who covered by years the hole that they left when abandoned the SGI Freeware...

Summarizing, I feel a lot disgusted.

They aren't recycling anything. They are crushing them.
Fuck those bastards.

So, there you have it. Is not it really depressing then? A couple years ago an employee from SGI told me that there are about two hundreed Silicon Graphics O2 here in Argentine, all of them mainly lower end boxes. Most part of them concentred at the city of Buenos Aires.

I have myself a few dozen customers here in my country, and sometimes, even having good money to buy one/more systems (to allow me to accomplish with orders from other customers, it is clear) I could not find a decent system to buy. All of them, since Nekochan in advance are well-keeping their boxes, and the once saturated second-hand market for SGI(s) today is close to /dev/null/

Now; could you imagine what could be the reaction for any conservative market (as the argentinean one for SGI boxes) if you open a sale for either old/new stock from factory, with some affordable prices? ...I don't know, I think it should be better than nothing... I could bet half dozen tangerines that they never sold a Prism or an Altix here...

All in all, it seems that our market is too conservative, since I have not good offers by now for my 600MHz O2, but I could sell on five minutes a R5K/180MHz...

Hum, care to elaborate? Innovative yes (like a decade ago), the most innovative not even close IMHO at least regarding the field of computing.
