Octane arrived. Advice on small problem.

Unread postby Intuition » Fri Dec 15, 2017 2:27 pm

So the Octane I purchased from Fox arrived and it is in very good condition. Very clean shell.

The only issue is that in shipping one of the screws that releases the mobo looks bent.

And advice before I fiddle with it? I am guessing it needs to be bent straight again?

Also, I forgot I need an adapter for the hdm to vga. Will any one do or are there specific sgi versions?

Going to get this set up for tutorials within the next week hopefully.

Its very nice for what I paid. Thanks Fox. :)

I'm sorry that one got bent in shipping as I packed that very well...

I usually straighten those with vise grips if they're bent

I think its fine. If that is all, it is very minor. Just need to get an adapter now to test it.

They have those $30 ones on Ebay. Just wondering if maybe local Fries electronics might have similar OR if SGI has a specific one?

Not sure how that one pic ended up sideways, Its upright on my phone.

There are specific 13W3 to VGA converters for SGI machines, so you must make sure that you purchase the right type.

Very nice machine! :D

There is a DIP switchable 13w3 cable on eBay I highly recommend.

I had the same screws bent from my Octane 2 Fox sent me. They are easy enough to straighten out with a pair of pliers. That's what I did. I got my 13w3 adapter from Amazon super cheap, and works flawlessly with my Octane.

This is the one I got

Nah Fox :3 Those screws are kinda weird and they bend easily. Not sure how they get bent in transit though :\

My top screws are completely stripped and won't screw in anymore, I think a pair of pilers / vice grips should sort out your issue. They are kinda flimsy, but then the Octane was never suppose to go through standard shipping channels!.

I bought a specific Octane / Indigo2 13w3 -> db15 adapter as not all the Sun ones work. $22 on eBay. (+£10 shipping to the UK + £8 handling fee + £6 import duty....most expensive bloody adapter ever!) Complete forgot I could get one from Ian for £15! The eBay one promises to work with modern panels, even if they are not SOG. (Doesn't work on my HP panel very well though)

Even with the 13W3 adapter don't you also need an SOG monitor to avoid getting the Matrix-like "green tint" syndrome?

It's conceivable they put a sync separator into it.

Some adapters have sync separators in to eliminate the green tint, like the one I bought. Others are just straight pin swap adaptors which still need a SOG monitor.

Probably, I ordered an adapter this morning from Monospace. The one on Amazon was from Monospace so I just went to their website.

It was two dollars cheaper at the website and I could do overnight shipping vs Amazon saying the best they could do was Dec 27th,

Hopefully it will work with my LG monitor.

But, I am in Los Angeles so there are always old SGI SOG cathode monitors around.
One on Craigslist right now.
BUT.. I don't want a big heavy screen like that anyways.

I would like to just get an SGI multilink adaptor, Then maybe the 13w3 out to vga would then be converted properly by the multilink adaptor to show the Octane on a 1600sw. Honestly never seen an Octane displayed on an 1600sw.

So is that the only difference between the so-called "Sun" and "SGI" 13W3 to VGA adapters, that the sync is separated? I admit to having a bunch of those adapters lying around, but I've never tried using them for anything.

The only reason I still have five clunky old CRT monitors is because I'm too lazy to haul them to the county recycler, which will take them for free. Maybe this weekend...

You can strip out the sync with some passives. There are fancier "sync separators" available that aren't necessary because the SGI provides separate sync already. Lots of monitors that can't SOG are at least tolerant of the sync signal so long as the H and V sync are provided on the appropriate pins. I had one like this.
