If SGI had kept Alias IRIX-only then someone else would have written something good enough that would have run on a "good enough" PC and they still would have gone down.

There's still plenty of graphics stuff being done, but look at who replaced SGI. Not a company spending lots of money to develop top end professional graphics, but companies that develop speedy stuff that sells for cheap enough to attract the gamers and then they leverage that to build a professional graphics card.

SGI would have died whether or not they'd opened stuff if they kept building only for the high end and insisting on the profit margin that they had come to like. All of the consumer things mentioned in that article have at least one thing in common - while they were designed with technologies from SGI, SGI didn't build them. SGI was too tied in with their current business model. True, the Indigo, Indy and O2 were cost competitive with a high-end PC at introduction, but SGI never kept that up - and more importantly the affordable software wasn't there for general-purpose stuff. Sure, they were great computers, but as soon as PCs became "good enough" they took over because they were cheaper and could also run cheaper general-buisiness apps, so people didn't feel a need for two machines on their desk.

Here's something else: CHALLENGE. Very expensive, sold through 1996. Did SGI ever produce a working 100Base card for them? Did SGI ever produce a UltraSCSI card? Fiber Channel?

The late '90s leadership seizure was just the icing on the cake. Though it is surprising that SGI let themselves be hoodwinked twice by MS- you'd think most companies would wake up after the first time (MIPS ARCS NT).
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

There are those who say I'm a bit of a curmudgeon. To them I reply: "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

Good points. I wonder why they never took the GE technology and made it into a PC graphics card. They were ahead of everyone else. The other household names in PC graphics didn't even exist at the time.

A lot of SGI employees left to form NVidia... Maya hardware acceleration of a certain vintage only works on Quadro and ATI FireGL.
SGI once also owned Alias-Wavefront (then makers of Maya) as well as MIPS.. Even a V12 in a Tezro is not supported for hardware accelerated rendering in Maya 6.5.. Mental Roy in 3D World magazine recently really slammed SGI and the retro thing... Not that I've read that much into anything Mental Roy has to say..

You'll have to buy the magazine.. I didn't find a link on to Memtal Roy at http://www.3dworldmag.com/
I read it in the June 2012 print edition with the Dolphin on the cover. Its always a few pages from the back.

Had a look, but the June issue wasn't on the shelves at the store I'm in. I'll pick up the May issue and have a look though, haven't seen this one before... (iPhone is *not* being cooperative...)

Do they carry this at "The Last Bookstore Standing", aka B&N?

I was both shocked and pleased to find that they were carrying it - both April and May issues - at the B&N in Walnut Creek, California. Still at least one of each there after I split, but be warned that each issue retails for US$15.99 plus your local sales tax ...

Geez. Seems like every reasonable magazine now costs more than a book! All the architecture, Linux, aviation mags are touching $20. Ridiculous.
