If anyone at SGI had a conscience they would release the models for all their skins so we could start making our own replacements. But nooooo, they will never do that because we might put SGI logos or (worse) funky non-SGI logos on our homemade skins, and as a result SGI might be made to look bad... :x

If you think you're going to be able to 3D print new skins that don't look like total garbage, you are more delusional that the OP is about finding a set of intact o200 skins ;)

Much better for someone to make molds for injection molding than 3D printing.

Sure, but it's more expensive, especially for a low quantity production.

Nah I'd send the models to my local injection molder... 8-)

Is it not possible to get the skins scanned at an extremely high level of detail with equipment such as this:

https://www.ntcadcam.co.uk/resources/blog/article/blog/2016/08/28/3d-scanners-for-reverse-engineering

And then have them 3D printed in high fidelity with a powder-type 3D printer?

It would be costly, but it surely is an option though?

Sure, in fact if you were patient enough you could probably do it with a long vernier and a set of French curves... :P

That will take a considerable amount of time to model properly, especially where the interlocking parts ("seams") are.

In the future if someone here was to get hold of such a scanner then we could maybe set up a database of SGI skin models that members can just download.

We just need proper (non filament-based) 3D printer technology to become more cheaply available.

Or if SGI would just release the design drawings. IIRC those designs were all outsourced to some injection molder in the valley near their world HQ. I have a lifelong friend who worked for SGI for decades in Chippewa Falls, he got fed up a couple of years ago and quit and now works for Cray, I'll ask him if he can dredge up any information about the availability of the drawings...

That'd be pretty rad. I belong to this keyboard/keycaps forum keythority and I had them do custom keycaps. They do group buys to get the double injection plastic mouldings. Hundreds of people sign up. But it was a long process. I ordered Dec of 2015 and just last month the Keycaps arrived. The injection place had that long of a wait list for orders.
