There's currently one (DEC Multia VX42) available in France here in the forum.

The multia, with all respect, is not very powerful. it's cute but not what I would call a real Alpha box, the other boxes had a reputation for powerful iron.

PC164SX/LX boards show up from time to time on eBay for pretty cheap - one of those, some RAM, a hard drive, and any decent ATX case (plus some PCI cards) should get you rolling.

Alphas came in a desktop/tower workstation form called Alphastations. The early Alphastations up to the DS10 were intended to be workstations, but from the DS10 onward they were the same machines for server and workstation, but the Alphastation variant had graphics and a sound card.

But they are often very, very expensive on fleabay. Even the older Alphastations often go for thousands of dollars and they aren't nearly as blessed as SGIs with all the wonderful software. Getting most operating systems isn't too challenging, but getting applications for those operating systems is.

They are very nice machines, just a shame that they don't get the attention they deserve.

Well, Windows NT for Alpha can at least run x86 software in emulation. No idea what the Tru64 software scene is like, though.

Tru64 is sparse and VMS has lots of archived tools, but most of it is so old it's literally fossilized.

There is a guy in Holland that is selling some HP X1000's

http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/computers-e ... e=lr&pos=2

Asking price 100,- euro but I am sure you can get that down a lot. Shipping would be very expensive though.

Funny. I had a digital personal workstation 500au that I bought on craigslist and then powered on maybe twice. Didn't even put an OS on it before I gave up and moved on. Maybe it was the boring ATX case, or maybe it was the fact that it was just going to wind up being an extremely slow linux box for me, but it just didn't have the same appeal as SGI boxes.

I second commodorejohn's recommendation of a 164LX-type system. I have one sitting next to me that runs Tru64 and OpenGenera very nicely. Wasn't particularly expensive even considering I had to get it an ATX case and power supply. It has sexy AlphaCat stickers.
smit happens.

You got it for free just out of pure luck...Probably considered worthless by whoever threw it out/gave it to you. Alot of people got SGIs for free too that command a decent price out there, just because whoever didn't realize/care/couldn't be bothered that other entities considered them to be worth more than just scrap metal.

I'm looking myself again and I still see the usual trend for complete Alphaservers and Alphastations(Ebay dot com) is a minimum of $1K USD. Also seen bidding wars erupt over DS10s and DS15s, easily reaching over $1000.

Might be a good idea to put that Alphastation on the market. Someone will buy it for the right price.
