fwiw an RE is more useful than a VGTX. that's assuming you can find something useful for IRIX 6.2

Yep. I'm planning on setting my Crimson RE back up again in the next week or so and installing some tgcware.

Crimson has many qualities but 'useful' isn't one of them

Have fun :)

You're probably aware of the IRIX 6.2 'fx.IP17' bug (I think the recommended/required patchsets contained a fixed version btw), but they screwed up the RealityEngine textport as well in the vanilla IRIX 6.2 install on Crimson. You loose the textport as soon as the IRIX kernel starts loading, and will not get any output until XDM appears. Patch 1550 provides a partial fix: you get the textport back while *loading* IRIX, but upon shutdown from X11 the textport is still frozen :?

Code: Select all

       1.  Patch_SG0001550_Release_Note

This release note describes patch SG0001550 to IRIX 6.2.

       1.1  Supported_Hardware_Platforms

This patch contains bug fixes for Crimson Reality Engine
(IP17 processor with Reality Engine graphics).  The software
cannot be installed on other configurations.

       1.2  Bugs_Fixed_by_Patch_SG0001550

This patch contains fixes for the following bugs in IRIX
       6.2.

o On IRIX 6.2, Crimson Reality Engine was shipped with a
version of graphics prom microcode that didn't work,
            this patch fixes the problem.

I still keep a copy of the 'required/recommended', Y2 and POSIX patch sets available here: ftp://ftp.jurassic.nl/pub/irix/patches/ ... _required/
They used to be mirrored widely, but alas ...

Yep - I have the Youtube video of the Crimson RE boot with the working textport - I think that's what led you to research that bug in the first place :)

Anyway, by "set up" I meant plug it back in and attach a keyboard/mouse/monitor; it already has IRIX 6.2 installed.

Local pickup only, though.

Nice. Bit pricey, but since Crimsons are increasingly rare while remaining in high demand, that is to be expected. And this is a very clean looking beastie.

Seller says he's willing to co-operate with a shipper, so there's that, but be advised: this thing needs to be undressed and packed very well if it is to survive shipping and still look as good. It'd be a terrible thing to see those skins destroyed through improper packing. I'd advise to ship the boards and skins separately from the chassis.

Based on its small physical dimensions and quiet operation, the chassis fits into a normal office environment.

Yeah, that looks like a very nice one, looks like it's been well looked after :)

I don't have the room for it (that and the collection from here would add another £100 in fuel etc), but I hope it finds a nice home :)
