WTB: AlphaServer DS20e Drive tray.

Unread postby PymbleSoftware » Thu Feb 18, 2010 4:35 am

spud bracket, drive tray, drive sled, what ever you call it. I have no hard drives in my otherwise nearly maxed out DS20e..

I'd like just the plastic tray to hold the DS20e drives in place.. I have most types of SCSI hard drives...

Any leads or anything would help..
Thanks.

It's the same tray as used by all Compaq Proliant servers since about the DL380. They're not exactly what I'd call rare.

Tried one of those and it doesn't fit...

Seems there were two types of tray on the DS20e one that used the silver ones with the xxGb capacity written on lever and another one... Seems someone I know with two DS20s and has both types... and the silver trays won't fit.

Interesting. I'll have to look closer at mine. I stand corrected until then!

I just pulled a drive from my ProLiant 1850R and successfully inserted it into my DS20e. It fits fine. Visually, they are identical.

I'm not sure what else to say?

edit: Missed where you said there are two types of DS20e. I was not aware.

My friend has the proliant type ones, the silver ones in one of the machines and the other has a black flimsy plastic thing.. I suspect mine is the later type. Notice how the entire drive bay comes out with a couple of screws.. Maybe I should post photos of his trays.. Its bizarre and annoying..
I am running Tru64 on an external drive which is good enough for now..

This looks to be a close match for the ones in this 1850R:

Yes.. Tried one of those and it does not fit.. Yet it fits in one of my friends DS20e and not his other one.. I might get to a point where I build something myself..

Recondas - your photo shows exactly what mine are. I'm not sure what type Pymble is after, if not that one.

Pymb .. yeah that drive sled I handed you was out of a DL380.. because I have 3. Also.. it fits the newer DS20e perfectly, but definitely does not fit in the older DS20e that has the nasty sounding fans. It's disk sled box is ~30% bigger and I suspect it's one of these:

http://files.discountechnology.com/prod ... image1.jpg

..note that it's taller. Yours probably has the bigger one? I've one of each and will get the camera busy tonight to compare.

Or.. one of the old compaq smart array disk boxes ..the name of which escapes me, but they were white and had 2 purple squeezie bits (tech term alert!) that opposed each other. I've heard them called "mandible boxes". Not the stuff that goes in the BA35x's ..between those and the ones in the DL380 and the other DS20e they had the mandible ones. Still looking for an image, I used to have some vagues gave me out of a smart array about 3-4 years back.

Actually..found some mandible drives..

http://www.techsg.com/images/photos/CompaqwDLT.JPG

The middle two rows. Squeeze the purple bits and they fold out. It was a pita that used to do your thumbs in, they were never spring loaded and used to make me shake my fist frequently.
