Octane III on eBay

Unread postby SiliconClassics » Wed May 16, 2018 7:24 pm

Not my auction, but this is the first Octane III I've seen for sale on eBay. No clue what it's worth or what you could actually do with it.

It's a glorified cluster is what they are. I've come across a few of 'em when I worked at Linux Netwox. Not really all that interesting other than they had an available model that used Atom chips. That caused alot of *gasps* in the HPC world.

Why not? And compared to what?

The Octane III is definitely not one of SGI's more lust-inspiring systems. But according to specs that the seller just added to the eBay item description it can be outfitted with up to 120 Xeon cores and 2TB of RAM. That would be a pretty sweet RHEL box!

It's got a bidder at $1,100, we'll see where it goes.

120 cores? Which xeon?

That would mean it'd need the full blade potential filled to max right?

When these first hit and I read the specs back in ... maybe 2006-2008, I sent an email and was basically asking if it could be used for satellite rendering.

No response of course. SGI really did not understand what people wanted after 2003. I think this version of SGI was Rackable systems right? Or was this Octane 3 right before Rackable systems bought them?

The fact that they didn't try to somehow stay ahead of the prosumer CGI workstation market is why no one cared for the "G" in SGI anymore.

Definitely a Rackable era system - you can tell particularly as it has the Rackable-era SGI logo on it.
Systems in use:

It's a rackable era system. It's when Rackable changed their name to SGI and wanted to capitalize on the SGI brand

More cpus are easy...boring (OLD) Intel Xeons. Other than the sheetmetal, you could probably find the motherboards. It's just a bunch of supermicro motherboards in some sheetmetal...and it's old. Other than as an oddity for a collection it's not worth the opening bid...it doesn't even seem to have very many nodes installed.

I'd sooner buy a few 1U servers from the era....other than it is kind of cute as an ugly duckling oddity.

More interesting is the Cray CX-1...same bad idea, but Cray put a lot more effort into the enclosure....Cray even put active noise canceling in.

Yeah, I think they're SuperMicro X8 generation, Westmere EP Xeons (5500/5600 series)

Thats a pretty cool machine and it's a Cray!!!

It also has graphical capability if it's configured for it! (I'm sure I can find a use for one)

These machines are starting to become "affordable" and it's definitely one that I will get my hands on at a later stage! (I have to stop being lazy and get my V880z up and running first though)

I always thought po-dunk Rackable buying prestigious SGI was kinda funny. HPE makes sense. They actually manufacture their own stuff. But I digress and that's another forum topic.
