Selling SGI Collection

Unread postby HurricaneJames » Tue Dec 26, 2017 10:04 pm

A year ago I finally got to start my SGI collection. I wanted many of these systems for a long time, and my wife finally gave me the go ahead. Then, a couple months ago I got some great news, with a side order of losing my workshop/office in a few months and any spare time for the next few years. After significant internal debate, I have decided it is better if these machines get into the hands of people who will use them instead of a storage locker. I am located in Santa Clara, CA (near San Francisco), it would be substantially easier for me to not ship these, but I suppose I can ship if it is really necessary.

Prices are negotiable, they represent about what I have in the machine minus ~20% because I want them to go to good homes, but I'm willing to take off a bit more if I know they will really be loved.

Follow links for pictures.

$500 Octane 2x300MHz/2GB RAM/MXE
http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16732321
includes SGI granite keyboard/mouse, upgraded cherokee power supply, 13w3->VGA adapter, ~70GB HDD (don't remember the exact size), external SCSI DVD-ROM, and working LED light bar.

$150 Octane 250MHz/620MB RAM/2xESI
http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16732352
~4GB HDD (I think), I think it also has a 70GB internal drive for data

$200 Visual Workstation 320 w/ 1600sw
http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16732097
includes working 1600sw monitor, black SGI usb keyboard, generic mouse, bunch of extras/manuals (see link)

O2 (free)
http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16732387
I got this from retro just a couple weeks before I found out that I would not have time to play with it anymore. Skins are in pretty good condition. I powered it on when I got it to make sure it worked, I have not had time to do anything else since. Since it was free, I'm willing to pass it on for free for local pickup.

I also have spare:
Octane power supply ($30)
Octane 2 motherboard ($50)
Octane SI graphics card ($20)
Octane 195MHz CPU module ($20)
1600sw monitor, lights up but picture is scrambled (free)

Don't do it! You will probably end up regretting it in the future.

If you have kids, they would make good educational toys.

I can't claim to know your situation, but are you sure there's no way for you to squirrel them away somewhere (eg. helpful friend's house, storage unit if you own one, etc) until you have more space? Besides, if you ever do have free time, playing around with an SGI doesn't take long. One of the easier and less space-consuming methods (I do this myself) is to leave a machine running in the basement with a VNC server, and then you can VNC into it from your main computer whenever you want to play with IRIX. I would understand if you had to get rid of an Onyx rack or something, those things are huge, but even if you're losing your workshop, two octanes, and O2, and a VW320 can't be THAT big...

Ah well, at least it looks like you intend to keep the Mini Indigo :) . I've been wondering if I'll ever see one sold used on the Nekochan Bazaar. "ORIGINAL CANADA POST PACKAGING AND "WELCOME TO MINI INDIGO" SHEET INCLUDED!".

If you really want to, or have to get rid of them, ditch the Octanes, but hang on to the O2 and the 320, as they're good examples.

Especially if you keep the O2, you will still have a foot in the door and be able to play around with IRIX in the future. (When you have the time and space)

I sold my 2x400Mhz V8 Octane2 and 400Mhz mint O2 in 2009 and still regret to this day doing so. See if you can store them away somewhere, the O2 looks in very good condition. At least keep the O2, Octanes are readily obtainable.

If they have to go then hopefully they'll go to a good home.

I'm down in Los Angeles.

Is there any 3D animation software installed on any of them?

I'm always looking for old Irix installs that had 3d animation packages on them. Maya, Softimage, Power Animator, Lightwave, etc.

I'm not happy about it, but it is the right thing to do. We are apartment dwellers in the SF bay area. There are no basements, and our friends have even less space than we do. The cheapest storage locker is ~$700 / year. Plus, and this is important, my wife does not like seeing my old computers, but she hates the idea of spending more than they cost to keep them in a storage locker.

I keep that on my desk at the office. One of these days I hope to put Kronos on it.

Why does she hate your old tech that much? The only girlfriend I had that hated my old tech didn't last long.

Sorry to hear. I'm happy to take that O2 off your hands tho.

I just dropped the prices as low as I'm willing to go before putting these up on eBay. I would really like to see them go to good homes, but I need to move them so I can start remodeling my old office by the end of January.

Are you willing to part with the granite keyboard and mouse you have bundled with your Octane?
