For Sale: SGI Octane 300MHz 300GB 6.5.30 preloaded

Unread postby Raion-Fox » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:18 pm

For sale is an SGI Octane I picked up recently from a local recycler. I am currently refurbishing the case and will post pictures then, the case is near perfect with no major dents or dings. It has the following specs:

300MHz R12k (single)
512MB RAM
300GB 15k SCSI HDD (comes with one sled)
SE graphics
Upgraded Cherokee PSU
Xbow 1.2
IRIX 6.5.30 preinstalled. This includes the NFS components and the MIPSPro Compilers installed.

I'm asking $225 plus postage to the continental US. I can also deliver if you live in Eastern or Central VA, MD or DC for an additional fee.

I should be having a large number of SGIs coming in between now and February, they will be listed as they become ready for sale.

Pictures and HINV will be posted as soon as my restoration efforts are finished, but in the meantime I would like to gauge interest. PM me for information regarding payment or other pertinent questions

Jeez, you weren't kidding. The case looks very nice.

Not that it would sway my decision, but can you put octane 2 cpus in an Octane?

I can most likely buy it on the 10th or 17th. Can't remember which net 30 invoice is coming first.

Oh... can it hook up to the sw1600 or does it need a part for that?

Octane2 has four improvements over the Octane: revised power supply, system-board and xbow. Octane2 also shipped with VPro graphics and supports all available VPro cards (V6, V8, V10 and V12). Later revision Octanes also included some of the improvements mentioned.

Judging by the logo on the case, this appears to be one of the earlier Octane models, so I don't know if it's system board will support Octane 2 CPU's, but this is an upgrade that you can perform at a later stage if you want.

The revised xbow of the Octane 2 is absolutely necessary for a V12 graphics card to be fitted.

Nice looking system BTW!

There's no such thing as an Octane2 CPU. The older '0887' mainboard will take CPUs up to 400MHz R12K (except the 270MHz R12K).
The R14K CPUs are officially only supported on the newer '1467' board. If you can afford one of those a newer rev mainboard should not be a problem either.

Thanks for the correction, I meant R14K Module for Octane 2, which doesn't fit into any other SGI machine that I'm aware of, apologies for that!

I see this mainboard on ebay. Does it just slide right into an Octane 1? I ultimately would want to get a dual 600 mhz if possible, though a dual 400 mhz would be fine as well if that is the limit.

Also I wonder what "VPRO" this one is?

Intuition I dont recommend this machine if you're wanting an Octane2 setup. You're better off buying an Octane2 than trying to remake this one.

Well, it's not an Octane 2 I am looking for specifically. I am looking for a really nice Octane setup optimally for 3d graphics. Softimage and Maya.

The Dual CPU and graphics snappiness is the main draw. I have a 400mhz o2 so to get an Octane I'd want to at least get better performance than the o2 400mhz. The dual CPU, gfx and memory/ram upgrade ability are the first in mind.

It looks like you are making great efforts to make a real nice stock Octane and I wouldn't want to Frankenstein it.

Jut was curious about the CPU upgrade limit is all. If it can do dual 400 mhz on the current mainboard then that is fine.

EDIT---

Quite honestly if you could set it up for desktop screen video capture you'd save me a lot of testing time. I could never get the o2 to desktop capture bigger than 720x486.

You're going to want an Octane2 with video capture. The Octane/Octane2 needs a separate video capture card. This also lacks Vpro which requires a newer XBOW revision to install. You really really need an Octane2 if you want that.

Oh, I thought Octane had a "personal video option" to capture the desktop. Even if yours didn't come with it it was an Octane 1 setup wasn't it?

Your Octane looks so good and you are already setting it up. For that price I'd take it just to have a really good Octane 1 as is.

PM your zip code to me and I'll give you a shipping quote. I do have someone ahead of you but I will have a 175MHz Octane come through as well.

Hmm, if there is demand at this price point I would ponder selling off part of the "corner of IP30"...
