They're not actually such big machines, they're about twice the size of an octane and weigh in at about 30 kg.

Hi Nekochaners,

Very long time since I last posted or even turned on my Octane2...

But saw this old Tezro and thought it looked like interesting sgi/irix revival project to add last of sgi mips workstations to my old computer museum (3 x PC, 3 x M68k Mac, 1 x SGI Octane2).

Seller sent me hinv and it is 4 x 700 with DM3 (I have 3 VBOB in garage). Assuming it's V12 and obviously has dual DCD option. As he did not do hinv -vm , I don't know exact specs.

Will provide update when box lands in Australia (in one piece ... keeping fingers crossed)

Cheers,

jwhat.

Well hey, congrats on baggin' it! :D

Let us know how it goes...

I bought my Tezro locally but I had to wait many years for one to pop up, it was worth it though, the skins are scratch-free mint... :)

Indeed congrats, I was discussing with the wife how I absolutely needed a Tezro and possible won out, but I'll save it for the next possible machine that pops up.

I sincerely hope for you they don't toss it in a box with some bubble wrap or foam peanuts. A Tezro weighs close to 30kg, which is the upper limit of what you can send by regular shipping (post office). And proper shipping material easily weighs a couple of kilos itself.

Hi Nekochaners,

Not sure which is harder...

1. Getting spouse approval or
2. Getting 30 Kg Tezro shipped to Oz without damage.

;)

Shipping was nearly AUD $500 , so should be fast service and so minimize likelihood of damage.

As an aside I ordered couple of ACARD scsi/sata adaptors to allow me to put in SSD, which I did with Octane2 and noticed that ACARD web site appears to be down... I hope they are still in business as there adaptors are very handy to keeping these old boxes going.

Cheers,

Where do you put that fscking thing? It's bigger than the woman in the pic!!

You put a pillow on it and use it as a stool.

Too big to put on a desk, to beautiful to put underneath :D
If the thing isn't on fire it's a software problem.

Hi Nekocaners,

Old dubious should arrive in Australia this coming week.

I have been doing reading of forums on Tezro/Origin 350/Onyx 350 and wondering a couple of things...

1. I see that Tezro Rack is part of Chimera group and system boards are inter-changeable across then. Is this also true of Tezro Tower board ? Can you swap Tower & Rack boards ?

2. Does Tezro 4 x 1ghz Rack have enough space for V12 ?

3. Can you put DM3 (XIO) in Tezro “expansion chassis” rather second V12 ?

4. Is Onyx 4 exactly same as other Chimera Rack systems, but just with 2 ATI cards in expansion chassis, rather than V12 + extra PCI slots as per Tezro expansion chassis ?

Thanks for any feedback.

Cheers from Oz.

I have an Origin 350 node board in my Tezro. Its a quad R16K 700 MHz with 8MB cash per CPU as apposed to the 4MB of cash per CPU that you get in standard Tezro, not that this really matters, as the types of application that I would run on the machine wouldn't be able to take advantage of the extra cash.

When I originally got the machine, it had a node board with only two R16K 700MHZ CPU's installed, and that wasn't going to do, so I upgraded it by installing an Origin 350 node board.

The node boards are therefore interchangeable.

It's got the following cards installed:

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with the rack mount versions of this system.

Please keep in mind that I have never used IP53 systems, and so my thoughts are based on information gleaned from the net.
jwhat wrote:1. I see that Tezro Rack is part of Chimera group and system boards are inter-changeable across then. Is this also true of Tezro Tower board ? Can you swap Tower & Rack boards ?

Yes, they all use the same node board (serial numbers may differ). See swap procedure. The interface boards are different, of course.

jwhat wrote:2. Does Tezro 4 x 1ghz Rack have enough space for V12 ?

No it doesn't. The 1GHz node board takes up more space (larger heat sinks and extra fans) and the graphics board won't fit.

jwhat wrote:3. Can you put DM3 (XIO) in Tezro “expansion chassis” rather second V12 ?

Yes, that is common.

jwhat wrote:4. Is Onyx 4 exactly same as other Chimera Rack systems, but just with 2 ATI cards in expansion chassis, rather than V12 + extra PCI slots as per Tezro expansion chassis ?

Onyx4 Ultimate Vision uses an AGP riser card in place of the PCI-X riser of the O350/Tezro. Otherwise it has the same node boards and interface boards as the other systems. You cannot mix InfinitePerformance (VPro), InfiniteReality, and UltimateVision in one system, only one graphics type is supported.
