They are rare but it seems like quite a steep price.

I've talked to this company (B&B) before, as they are located in Canada a sane driving distance from where I live. We didn't reach an agreement (I was looking into an Onyx2 but I think I'll wait until something like the collection selloff I got most of my SGIs from happens again) but they were good to work with and have a good number of systems for sale in the Montreal area. They may accept an offer from a hobbyist, but they sell primarily to businesses so don't be surprised by the $4000 price.

A large amount of crimson parts showed up around the same time that that crimson did on ebay, by the same seller. I suspect they got two of them and parted the second one out. They have the IO3 board i want, but $400 plus $100 shipping is just too much for me.

Still, if you need crimson parts, nows the time on ebay if you have no other option.

They also have a Personal Iris for $500, which isn't bad I guess considering how rare they are.

Now for something that rare, and for a whole machine, $500 seems reasonable. Ive wanted one of those, kinda grossly impractical for me because all my irix software is for later versions of irix.

I had a Personal Iris. They're so not worth having in my opinion. Too little software, too slow and too likely to have bad PSUs

According to the eBay listing this Crimson has been sold for the $4k asking price. Does anyone know who bought it?

I picked it up.. been looking for an SGI deskside for quite some time and a Crimson is just icing on the cake. Now I just need to figure out how to explain it to the wife and pay off the credit card.

Wow, if people really pay 4K for a Crimson then I guess it's a good thing I have a proper alarm system installed in my house ...

For your sake, I hope you negotiated some sort of non-DOA warranty, because that second picture screams "work in progress":

  • None of the boards except the GE8 are installed in the backplane.
  • The Reality Engine configuration in the photo is invalid. I spot a DG2 (the card with two red dots), and to the right of it: three RM boards. The number of RMs must be 1 or 2. Never three. Quad RM configs are reserved for Onyx and tall racks, the Crimson doesn't provide enough airflow.

Oh, and make sure all the fans in the fan tray are operational. They are essential and there's no fan monitoring!

That said, I hope you enjoy your new toy!

I suspect the buyer is just a collector who doesn't care about using the computer. He/she simply enjoys to own it. Therefore I wonder if we'd better make some replicas, like in the movie industry.

Some parts can be made in plastic, some need to be metal. Painted and then made look more attractive by adding extra details such as the "Silicon Graphics" logo which can be made as custom vinyl Stickers. They are durable and waterproof.

The final price would certainly be under 4K USD

The Van Gogh museum sells replica posters as well, but they're not worth a lot of money, nor would an art collector consider them a replacement for the real deal.

Same here. I used to pull desksides out of garages for 50DM a piece, that's ~ 25EUR... Nobody wanted them because they were brown and took up a lot of space. My current Crimson cost me a couple of hundred bucks, and most of that was spent when I upgraded it to RE graphics afterwards. Upgrades are always expensive.
