eBay includes shipping costs when calculating their final value fee. They started doing this a few years ago because some sellers were skirting eBay fees by selling items at low BIN prices and charging abnormally high shipping prices. So now eBay effectively takes 10% of whatever sellers charge for shipping in addition to the actual item sale price. Kind of a win-win for them.

From now on I'll take your advice to provide my own shipping materials. Seems like the only reliable solution.

I only use ebay to buy stuff, so I wasn't aware. I used ebid to sell things, but alas events got the better of me, site needs a revamp (they changed their setup, all the images, etc. have gone). Very different fee structure with ebid, but the site isn't large enough for general PC tech sales yet. Niche items like SGIs are ok though I reckon.

So, I just had a pretty shitty shipping experience myself. Figured I'd post the gory photos here as a warning to fellow would-be eBay buyers.

So I was greeted by this:

This was the grisly scene when opened:

Broke off both the front door (the door itself is fine, it broke the tabs off the front panel), and the side:

I'm so sad :(

Related, anybody got a spare faceplate or side panel they want to sell?

That's incredibly sad! :(

It's puzzling to me how the person who shipped that to you could have believed that it would arrive on your side in one piece, considering the lack of protective packaging! (Firstly you need to make use of a double walled box and wrap the machine in a few layers of bubble wrap and then fill the spaces in the box with foam "peanuts" to prevent it from moving around inside the box during transit)

Believe me, I'm as confused as you are. Haven't gotten it home yet to see if it still boots, but they did give me a full refund on the shipping costs, so that's something.

Their packaging broke just about every rule; no padding, box far too small, wrong type of box (in more ways than one), no box edge reinforcement, etc.

Compare to how I do it:
